The White German Shepherd: Best Family Dog

German Shepherds, Shepherds

A white German shepherd? Yes, a white German shepherd dog makes a great dog for kids, a great guard dog and a wonderful companion for adults. Not many people have heard of the white German shepherd dog breed. In fact, I never knew white German shepherds existed until my parents decided it was time to get her second dog, several years after their first dog, a Great Dane and German shepherd mix, went to doggie heaven. My mother said she was interested in a white German shepherd.

I was used to the usual black and tan German shepherds throughout my life. I even briefly tried to talk her out of it: a WHITE German shepherd? I didn’t think they’d be nearly as good-looking as the standard German shepherd dog. How odd, this big white dog that looks like a German shepherd. However, at the breeders, I saw eight white German shepherd puppies, and six of the puppies were already claimed, marked with a pink streak on their backs.

The remaining two puppies were male (what my parents wanted) and available. One had scruffy fur, and the other had smoother fur. They were very, very handsome puppies and full of energy. I selected the one with the smoother fur, and that’s the dog my parents took home. If you’re considering a great family dog, especially a German shepherd, it’d be smart to visit these dogs at a reputable breeder specializing in just this dog breed, and make sure the puppies’ parents are on site so you can see what these puppies will look like as adults.

A white German shepherd is NOT — I repeat — is NOT an albino. In fact, their coat isn’t even literally white as in fresh snow. It’s an off-white. Our German shepherd’s eyes are dark. In fact, the WGS’s footpads, mouth and nose are black. The WGS is as intelligent as any other variation of German shepherd. They can learn new commands in five attempts and are highly trainable. And they are just as playful, just as energetic, and just as territorial. In fact, German shepherds are bred for varying degrees of guarding instinct, and the white shepherd is no exception. The German shepherd was bred to be very territorial, and hence, our dog lets out his ferocious-sounding bark even when someone is merely walking across the street.

White shepherds, like black and tan shepherds, are full of personality and use a variety of barks.

The WGS, even well into adulthood, is a big puppy at heart. These powerful, regal dogs always want to play. They learn quickly and are superior athletes and jumpers. Our white German shepherd goes nuts at the site of any ball, and has astounding agility when it comes to leaping after Frisbees. The hips of the white shepherd are not as sunken as in the more common GS, and thus, the white breed is not as prone to hip dysplasia.

The white German shepherd is very striking in appearance and will attract attention wherever you go with one. So if you’re a man looking to meet women, and thinking about getting a dog to help out (experiments show that women tend to think men with dogs, especially puppies, have the sensitive attributes they seek), then get a white German shepherd: a guaranteed conversation starter.
