Blue Buffalo, Fried Zucchini

Located at 438 Moreland Ave NE, in Atlanta, The Vortex is one of a kind. It is an Atlanta favorite, and you will quickly discover what makes this place so unique. It is a very serious bar scene (they take pride in their bar and liquor selections, boasting only the best) with very, shall we say, interesting décor (shall we say, “sinister”? Yes, that would be a good term, considering when you first walk in you are greeted by a skull). But even despite it’s interesting and someone fun décor, it’s a really great place to enjoy some delicious food. “killer” food!

To start off with, they serve breakfast all day, so whether you’re in the mood for eggs or perhaps a breakfast burrito or other sandwich, they’ve got you covered! Try a Brooklyn Egghead Sandwich – it’s two fried eggs topped with cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and red onion on grilled Texas toast along with your choice of fries, tater tots, potato salad, cole slaw, or a bag of chips.

What you will quickly discover about the menu, too, is all the great appetizers to choose from that you may just decide will be your meal in itself! Try the Chili-Cheese Spuds, $5.95 – it’s a huge heap of French fries (or, tater tots) with your choice of chili, cheddar, and diced red onion; Fried Zucchini, $6.25, sliced and battered and fried to perfection with ranch dressing; Buffalo Wings, $7.95, a dozen of them; Kari-Kari, $6.95, which are little dumpling pastries with cream cheese, crab meat, garlic, fried and served with sesame soy sweet pepper dipping sauce; Quesadilla Grande, $6.25, stuffed with melted jack and cheddar and salsa. All so good!

The restaurant boasts on it’s burgers, so make sure to try one of the many selections offered like the simple Plain Ol’ Burger, topped with just lettuce, tomato, and red onion – and that’s all it really needs, $6.45; or go with a Bacon Cheeseburger, $7.95; Swiss and Mushroom Burger, $7.95; Ragin Cajun Burger, $7.95, topped with a great secret Cajun sauce and pepperjack cheese; the Great Big Jerk Burger, $7.95, topped with a great jerk sauce and provolone cheese; the Big Blue Buffalo Burger, $7.95, drenched in buffalo wing sauce with blue cheese; or even go for the Double Coronary Burget, $13.25, that you won’t be able to finish, which is topped with two fried eggs, four slices of American cheese, 5 slices of bacon, and two grilled cheese sandwiches replacing the buns!

There are plenty of other delicious sandwiches to choose from as well, like the yummy Grilled Chicken Melt, $8.95, topped with a grilled tomato slice and their special bacon scallion cream cheese on delicious homemade focaccia bread; A Vortex Veggie Melt, $7.45, with your choice of either a plain or black bean patty, atop grilled rye with sautéed mushrooms, provolone, red pepper, sweet red onion, tomato, and honey mustard dressing; the Fried Fish Sandwich, $7.45, topped with Monterey Jack cheese; the Classic Reuben, $8.25; the Baked Fiery Italian Sub, $8.95, with black forest ham, salami, capicola, provolone, and lettuce, tomato, jalapeno tapenade, on a hoagie; or even the Big Fat Chili Dog, $6.54, covered with your choice of chili, jack and cheddar cheeses, and diced red onions.

And there are great salads, too, like the Vortex House salad, $5.95, that also has cranberries in it; Acapulco Salad, $8.25, with grilled chicken and a great avocado ranch dressing; or perhaps the Asian Seared Tuna Salad, $9.95, along with mandarin oranges and sesame sticks to complement it!
