Dana Scully and Fox Moulder could be back together.
Once again the special agents in charge of creepiness will be chasing little green men or green blobs or… that unknown thing that is lurking just out of sight when you turn your head and look into the shadows. A new but yet untitled “X Files” is slated for release this summer.
It’s time.
It could be that the many increased sightings of UFOs in England has resurrected this beleaguered duo. They were the collective Rodney Dangerfields of the FBI, the X Files office of Fox Moulder were relegated to some obscure corner of the FBI basement.
It was the theme music of the X Files that drew me to the series. Who can forget the “Do, do, do, do, do…da,do, do,do,do,do”. Erie. And the opening with that phantasm slinking down the steps. Is there anyone alive that hasn’t awakened to some strange fleeting figure?
Early on, Dana and Fox were zipping across the US (mostly) in search of proof of aliens –not the type that cross borders and arrive by jet — but those that may have come from some far off galaxy. Added to that were the home grown earthly mysteries that popped up from time to time, such as a Bigfoot terrorising a population, or a wayward vampire still wanting to suck blood in an age when the government and large corporations have the power fangs.
There was tension in every episode. It was between Dana and Fox. That to me was the “X Factor” of the X Files.
Dana Scully was a medical doctor, and she was assigned to help out this loon, Fox, and his goofy investigations. To say that she was not a believer was an understatement. Whenever some strange event was being investigated Fox would automatically peg it to aliens or some other type of unexplainable phenomena. Scully would drag him back to reality with a logical explanation.
Because they worked together and traveled together Fox and Scully got to see a lot of each other. As the series went on, and as some things couldn’t be rationally explained, Scully became a reluctant believer. She grew to like Fox because he was sincere. He grew to like her because she was someone he could count on. Eventually the “X Factor” of their mutual attraction became the truth that was out there.
The television series then got out of control. It created a whole mythology of aliens living amongst us, and there was the “smoking guy” who turned out to be Fox’s father; it just got too convoluted. I couldn’t follow it and lost track. I then popped in old reruns of “Moonlighting”. At least David and Maddie lived in the real world and enjoyed a cocktail now and then at Blue Moon Detective.
When the X Files were good, in my opinion, is when they clued off of past successful shows like “The Outer Limits” and “The Twilight Zone”. When the X Files episodes were wrapped up within an hour then we could understand. Often we didn’t understand the strange event that happened, but there was a beginning and a middle and an end.
Some things were left unresolved. One big X thing that was unresolved was the relationship between Fox and Scully. To me it was so confusing at the end that I didn’t know if Scully was having Fox’s baby or if the baby was an alien or if Fox was an alien who got randy with Scully.
One can hope that the new movie will define the relationship. After all, that tension, that chemistry, is why so many watched. You can only let your mind settle on a pile of ooze for so long before it begins to wander to the most basic of all things human. That being, will Fox and Scully do it? Will they get together? Will they live happily ever after in this universe or another?
You know, the X- or XXX Files?
The Truth is still out there. It’s coming to a big screen sometime soon.
