The Oak Street Beach – Chicago’s Trendiest Summer Hot Spot

Frozen Drinks, Magnificent Mile

When you think about Chicago, Illinois, you usually picture Christmas shopping along the Magnificent Mile, the beloved Chicago Bears, lake affect snow and below zero wind chill factors. That’s a pretty good overview of Chicago’s windy winter months, but when the snow melts and temperatures climb, Chicago is all about Lake Michigan. And the city’s hottest bodies can be found on its warm sandy shoreline at the Oak Street Beach.

The Oak Street Beach is located just north of the Magnificent Mile and is a vast stretch of waterfront property with layers of significant skyscrapers as its chic backdrop. Chicago’s most popular beach offers scenic lakeside paths for biking, walking, running and in-line skating. Volleyball, football, swimming and sunbathing are other favorite lakefront activities. In fact, the beach boasts oversized concrete patios perfect for sun worshippers and when things really heat up, there’s even a large ledge for refreshing deep water swimming.

For a trendier crowd, frequent the north end of the Oak Street Beach, while a quieter atmosphere can be found towards the southern end. But, be sure to get to the beach early because space fills up fast, especially in the heart of the summer and on weekends.

Oak Street Beach is clean and free and presents the perfect locale for enjoying the Air and Water Show, weekly fireworks from Navy Pier and romantic moonlit walks in the shadows of the twinkling skyline. The beach is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, from 9:00am to 9:30pm. Restrooms, vendors and bike rentals are available. There are also many parking garages available within walking distance of the beach.

Perhaps one of the most charming characteristics of this popular beach district is the waterside Oak Street Beachstro restaurant. Located towards the southern end of the beach, the Beachstro is a one of a kind eatery that rests atop the shoreline with endless views of both the water and the city. A cozy gazebo offers open air scenic seating and serves steak, salmon, ribs, pastas, salads and sandwiches, while the kitchen provides carry out service to go. The bar advertises an array of frozen drinks like daiquiris and margaritas, perfect for this tropical, yet metropolitan, setting.

Throughout the summer months, the Beachstro hosts clam bakes, lobster boils, live musical entertainment and even private tent parties for groups of up to 300 people. Customized menus and creative themes are welcomed. The Beachstro is open from May through September.

So, now when you think about Chicago, Illinois, think beaches, sun, sand and waterfront dining with tasty libations and unparalleled views!
