I recently stayed at the Hotel Monaco in the Old Town district of Alexandria, Virginia. Alexandria, Virginia is a town about 6 miles south of the center of Washington, DC. The Hotel Monaco is located in the The Old Town district, the oldest part of the city. Old Town has a large strip full of eclectic restaurants, galleries and shopping. It is a popular tourist area and a convenient place to stay while visiting the Washington, D.C. area.
The Hotel Monaco is one of two brands under the Kimpton Hotel and Restaurant Group. This Alexandria location opened in January 2008.
The Hotel Monaco in Alexandria, Virginia is a unique experience. Though there are six other Hotel Monaco locations, with the closest one in Washington, D.C., you cannot help but feel that you in the only one in the world. The Hotel Monaco has style. It has flair. It has a feel of specialness. This cannot be duplicated at some of the larger chain hotels. The décor in the rooms and the lobby is bold but unpretentious. You get the sense that you are in somebody’s house with a quirk, fun and warm personality as opposed to somebody who painted by the numbers and found something that ‘fit’.
Hotel Monaco Doggie Happy Hour
The hotel itself offers a number of special amenities. For one, the Hotel Monaco in Alexandria, Virginia is pet friendly, meaning they not only can the Hotel Monaco accommodate pets but they also host a “Doggie Happy Hour”, each Tuesday and Thursday, from 5:00PM through 8:00PM, from April through October. No, Doggie Happy Hour doesn’t consist of beer drinking dogs, but of a social gathering of hotel guests with their dogs in the courtyard. Complimentary dog treats and water are served as their human companions can enjoy a beverage or two themselves (the human drinks are not complimentary).

The Jackson 20 Restaurant, named in homage to Andrew Jackson, is adjacent to the Hotel Monaco and can be accessed through the Hotel Monaco’s lobby. The Jackson 20 serves American food and given its location in the middle of Alexandria Virginia’s Old Town, attracts a fun mix of Hotel Monaco visitors and locals alike.

The Hotel Monaco in Alexandria, Virginia offers in room massage services, including the signature massage, brown sugar massage, sake and rice massage and fluers de Chocolat Hot Stone Massage.

The Hotel Monaco has a number of different room sizes. The Monaco Loft Suite offers room for up to four people and 750 square of space. The Majestic Suite offers room for up to 20 people and is a 1600 square foot suite. The Mediterranean Suite is an 800 square foot one bed room option. The Hotel Monaco’s Monte Carlo Terrace rooms are 405 square feet, but offer an outdoor terrace overlooking the courtyard.
Some of the more modest room options include the King Premier and King Deluxe rooms and the Queen Delux and the Double Double rooms, which are also the most numerous rooms.

The Hotel Monaco offers room service, with breakfast delivered between 7:00AM and 11:00AM daily. They offer healthy starters, with fruit, cold cereals and granola dishes. They have a selection of omelets and egg and a chicken fried steak and eggs option. Prices range from $8.00 to $17.00 for the eggs and the starters are in the $10.00 range.
After breakfast, the Hotel Monaco offers room service from 11:00AM through 11:00PM daily, with burgers, salmon, chicken entrees. For vegetarians, a three cheese baked penne option is available. Their late night menu includes delicious sandwiches, soups and salads.
Hotel Monaco Room Amenities
The Hotel Monaco in Alexandria, Virginia offers complimentary wireless internet access all day. The rooms are equipped with 37 inch plasma televisions with Nintendo video games and 41 television channels, including premium cable offering such as Home Box Office, the Disney Channel and ESPN. The rooms are reasonably spacious, with some offering Jacuzzis and soft, comfortable beds.
