‘The Hobbit’ Halfway to $1 Billion at Worldwide Box Office

2012 Calendar, Continental Drift, James Bond Movie

Deadline reports that, even after the Christmas Day releases, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” continues to move strong and has now surpassed the half billion mark at the worldwide box office. According to boxofficemojo.com, the movie headed into the final weekend of 2013 with $200.5 million domestically and $400 million more internationally, making it an almost lock to reach the billion dollar mark before bowing out.

That makes 2012 one of the biggest years in cinema history when it comes to box office blockbusters. Here is a look at all the biggest box office successes of the 2012 calendar year.

“The Avengers” – At one time, James Cameron stood alone on top of the world, with two movies that broke the $2 billion mark. No movie ever hit the $1.5 billion mark other than him until 2012 when “The Avengers” finished its amazing run with $1.511 billion dollars. The Marvel superhero team-up movie shattered the solo efforts that led into it and made Marvel the king of the comic book movies.

“The Dark Knight Rises” – However, there is no discounting what Christopher Nolan did with the Batman franchise. While “The Avengers” sits alone in third place all-time, “Dark Knight Rises” is the second Batman movie that Nolan led over the billion dollar mark. Sitting at $1.081 billion, it remains the seventh highest grossing release of all time.

“Skyfall” – What the James Bond movie “Skyfall” did is beyond amazing. It is the 24th movie to feature the character of James Bond, yet made almost $400 million more than the second best film in the entire series box office history. It ranks 14th all-time, while “Casino Royale” ranks 74th.

“Ice Age: Continental Drift” – The one animated movie series that remains an anomaly is the “Ice Age” franchise. Domestically, the movies continue to drop, each making less than the one that came before. However, they have destroyed international box offices. The fourth movie in the series made $875 million worldwide, second to only the third in the series, with 81-percent of its box office coming from overseas markets.

“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2” – The final chapter in “The Twilight Saga” ended up as the fifth highest grossing film of 2012, with an impressive $796.9 million. Domestically, it ranks third in the series, but sits alone at No. 1 worldwide, with $84 million more than the closest competition.
