Review and Background of The Hobbit

The Hobbit is a classic fantasy novel that was intended for children, but can be loved today by kids and adults alike. J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit is the prequel to the popular Lord of the Rings Trilogy (which has been made into popular feature films on the big screen), and tells the story of how the young hobbits got their hands on the dangerous One Ring in the first place. Yes, as stated by the title of the book, hobbits play a major role in this novel.

One hobbit in particular, Bilbo Baggins (Frodo Baggins’ uncle), is the one hobbit who goes on a great adventure. The Hobbit follows Bilbo as he leaves the quiet Shire and enters a world of orcs, elves, wizards, dwarves, and dragons.

Plot Summary of The Hobbit

In The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, a well to do hobbit who has never dreamed of adventure, suddenly finds himself on an adventure of his own when Gandalf, a wise old wizard, knocks on his large green door. Bilbo discovers that he has been asked to be a burglar and help a band of dwarves win back their treasure from the evil dragon, Smaug, in their old home, the Lonely Mountain.

Will Bilbo Baggins be able to help the dwarves and Gandalf the wizard on his journey to slay the dragon Smaug and win back the treasure, or will he stay thinking he’s too small a hobbit to make any real difference?
