The green tree python is one of the most popular snakes in the pet trade. The reason for this is because they are absolutely stunning in appearance. The bright greens and yellows in this snake are unlike any other color on the planet. They are certainly unique. Keeping them as pet snakes takes some very specific information and implementation. Here is what you need to know to keep your pet green tree python safe and sound.
Color is certainly the highlight of this species and they know how to really show off. Some of the green tree pythons will be blue, yellow, green or any number of combinations of these colors. They are usually yellow as juveniles, but they can also be red or brown. Over time, they begin to change colors. This is one of the most exciting things about owning a green tree python.
Any great yellow tree python enclosure begins with a large enough cage. You do not want it too large, but you want them to have enough room to explore. An ideal cage size would be two feet wide and two feet tall, with about three feet of length. Most pet snake owners try to go really tall, but this space is not good for the green tree python. They need to be able to comfortably reach their water bowl down on the cage floor from the perches.
Speaking of perches, the green tree python needs plenty of parallel options. They will crawl throughout the cage and use the branches regularly. Allow the python plenty of sturdy and safe branches to curl up on and make certain that you keep the humidity right.
Humidity can be partly controlled by adding some live plants to the enclosure. This will also give your green tree python some cover should they wish to hide for a bit. Temperature should range from around 72 degrees at night to around 85 degrees during the day. Also, allowing the snake to have several ranges of temperature to choose from during the day can be beneficial. Humidity levels should be around 40 to 70 percent. Keep in mind that wetter is not always a better option.
The green tree python should also get regular mistings from a spray bottle or a cage set up. This simulates the rainforest habitat that they are accustomed to. Never over mist though or you could cause them to pick up infections and so on.
The green tree python is certainly one of the best pet snakes on the planet, but it is really considered an advanced level pet. You should never take this snake on as a pet initially, as it simply requires too much care and expertise. Once you have owned and taken care of some of the easier breeds, then moving on to the more complicated green tree python is much easier.
