When you first arrive to Freeport, Maine and the desert, you’ll want to take the 30 minute tour to stop your guessing and learn how this desert popped up in the middle of nowhere. It actually started over 10,000 years ago when an iceberg passed through the area and during its exit it deposited all of the sand and minerals that can be found there today. There is not just golden sand, there are many different colors and are all beautiful to look at as you walk through the desert.
After the coach tour, you will want to check out the various sections of the desert. One of the most popular things to do is just walk around and there are many walking tours or nature trails for you to take. It is weird seeing brooks and streams in one direction and all of a sudden a desert in the next, but this is all part of the experience.
Children will love exploring through the desert, and the paid admission even includes a free gem stone hunt. They will like collecting the shiny rocks to bring home as souvenirs from their trip. There is also a small picnic area for the children to show off their new gems at as the whole family can enjoy a snack or lunch and just take in all of the sights.
If you really like the Desert of Maine than you can actually stay overnight by camping there. Across from the desert is a full campground providing everything you will need for a weekend getaway like showers, bathrooms, and even water and electric if you own a trailer or an RV. The rates are pretty cheap and there are a lot of activities to do there, including a swimming pool.
Prices vary to enter but for Adults it is 8.75, Teens are 6.25, and Children are 5.25. If you book a site at the campground then your visit is free to the nature trails and you receive discounted rates for the full tour.
The Desert of Maine in Freeport, Maine is truly a sight to see if you have lived in New England or anywhere that you are used to forests. It comes up out of nowhere and will provide a relaxing and fun atmosphere for the whole family.
