Many people dream of owning a home with an ocean view. However, if that dream is anywhere near the south Texas coastline then you should be aware of some potential problems that may arise from it. In this article, I will discuss why you may want to reconsider living along the south Texas coastline.
Allergies.
South Texas has a notorious reputation when it comes to allergies. Sneezing, coughing, asthma, and a runny nose are some of the many problems that may occur around the south Texas coast. There are large amounts of pollen producing plants that increase the risk of allergy attacks for some people. So make sure you visit for an extended period of time to ensure that the allergies do not bother you.
Humidity and heat.
Another potential problem with living near the south Texas coast is the humidity and heat. For much of the year, it can be quite humid and hot. When you combine humidity and heat, the temperature will feel much greater than it actually is. Even if it’s just eighty five degrees, it can feel really hot if the humidity is high enough. And trust me, the humidity is often high enough.
Weather disasters.
Obviously, there are going to be weather disasters wherever you choose to live. However, if you choose to live near the south Texas coastline then you should be prepared to deal with some specific types of natural disasters.
The first one that should come to mind is hurricanes, which can be especially problematic if you live directly along the coastline. If a category four or greater hurricane hits your home, you may as well say your goodbyes. It is unlikely that much will survive a category four or five hurricane.
Another disaster you could face is a tsunami. While this is extremely unlikely to occur, it is a possibility. Tsunamis can be just a foot high, or they can tower above twenty feet. It just depends on how the tsunami was formed. Rest assured though, if a large tsunami hits your house then all is likely lost.
Mosquitoes.
In case you haven’t realized it yet, mosquitoes often will infest much of south Texas. Weather will ultimately determine the population of the mosquitoes. Obviously, if it’s a dry year then there will be less mosquitoes.
But even with just average rainfall, you can expect to see quite a few mosquitoes if you’re near the south Texas coastline. And if you’re having a really wet year, you can expect the mosquitoes to be even more prevalent. So be sure and pack plenty of mosquito repellent.
Insurance.
Something you may not have realized yet is that insurance rates are really high for people who live near the coast. Especially if you are going to live directly on the coast. Like I mentioned above, the possibility of your home flooding is very high along the south Texas coastline due to the threat of hurricanes and tropical thunderstorms. And don’t forget about the high winds that can be generated by the hurricanes. So be prepared to pay the price for your ocean view.
As you can see, your dream of an ocean view can become a nightmare fairly easily. If you still think you can handle all of the potential problems that I have listed then by all means live along the south Texas coastline. But you may come to regret that decision. Time will tell.
