The Art of the Female Body

Dita Von Teese, Female Body

Besides the cramps and the menstrual cycles that leave us bloated and in pain, women have to go through a lot in their lives, including mindless hours of labor should they decide to get pregnant and have the child. That doesn’t even mention the nine months in which they can gain up to 70 pounds in baby weight and have to constantly run to the bathroom because their bladders have become soccer balls. However, that does not change the fact that 90% of women are percieved as sexual beings, or just sexy in general. The female body is used as models in art class, and countless ads for Victoria’s Secret, the world famous lingerie company. Female breasts have objectified by billions of men throughout the years and it’s just become a notion that models should be curvy again.

If you ask a man about a model that weighs about 70 pounds, soaking wet, the man would probably be turned off. I’m not really sure what man enjoys a body that is purposely made to resemble a little girl’s body. Men enjoy curves and long legs and breasts. Some men like surgically enchanced breasts, some don’t. That’s why “gentlemen’s” clubs are so famous. Men love to watch women, and sometimes barely legal girls, take off their clothes and exude sex with their bodies. The way that they move across the stage, on the pole, or on the men’s laps, make the men think of sex and the fact that they are not allowed to touch the woman’s greased up, smooth bodies makes the appeal even stronger. It becomes forbidden to the man watching them and some women enjoy that look of lust in the man’s eyes. Some women feel objectified, and they end up leaving the profession.

Most people in Hollywood hasn’t quite gotten the hint that women are meant to have rock hard abs like men. At about 17, Britney Spears reportedly had breast implant surgery and there was a big fuss about that because she was only 17 and she hadn’t finished growing. However, she was pictured on the set of one of her music videos and something had to be said about her stomach bulging over the waistband of her pants because that same year, she did the infamous striptease at the VMAs. Tyra Banks is the tabloid target of the month. The former Victoria’s Secret model retired from the company and reportedly gained about thirty pounds. The photographers got photos of her in a bikini and began to ridicule her about her weight. She tearfully confronted people on her show, but she never had to confront anyone in the first place. She is Tyra Banks, a multi-million dollar company based on her name. She is over thirty and has been working in modeling since she was still in high school. She deserves to pack on thirty pounds and step into a bikini. That is the reason why she has the show America’s Next Top Model, to groom other girls to become healthy supermodels.

Keira Knightley is on the other end of the spectrum. This 21 year old actress has done countless movies in which she had to be athletic. However, there hasn’t been any speculation that she was suffering an eating disorder until just recently. Ms. Knightley had always been fairly thin and had an androgynous body since the movie “Bend It Like Beckham.” However, you also lose weight if you’re getting older and you’re working a lot. Ms. Knightley probably doesn’t have an eating disorder. She’s just normally thin.

Women are supposed to be soft and curvy for the babies that we were built to make. There are a lot of women that can’t have children, but there are women that voluntarily refuse to have children for whatever reason. That is not logical because women were created to be companions to men and procreate. That is what the menstrual cycle is for. Cramps are to prepare women for childbirth and the contractions that will have so they can push the baby out. Some women are voluntarily going for Caesarian sections so they won’t have to handle the pain, but that operation is only supposed to be used for emergencies. In addition to possibly injuring their bodies, they purposely mar their bodies and change them possibly for the worse. Women who get breast implants can possibly ruin their hopes of breast-feeding, which naturally enchances their breasts anyway. Women who get liposuction or other kinds of stomach surgery can possibly ruin their chances of having children. However, this is not what the article is about.

Many lesbians, and heterosexual women as well, can agree that women are sexier than men because everything about women is supposed to be soft and fair. Women that are naturally, or surgically, endowed love to show off their curves in tight clothes or sexy lingerie. Many actresses, like Salma Hayek and Sofia Vergara, are coined this generation’s Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor, who accentuated their curves and welcomed their heritage. Elizabeth Taylor was born in England, but she embraced her body and her beauty is still marveled. The term “If you got it, flaunt it” appeals to so many women that are still insecure about their bodies but there are probably about 5 women for every insecure woman on this planet.

The African American culture praises their women’s big behinds and thighs. In rap videos, women shake their curvy thighs and behinds and thong-like shorts. In reality, there is a majority of African American women that are full figured. A 300 pound African American woman is most likely to accept her weight and keep her confidence more than a caucasian woman. More caucasian girls suffer anorexia and bulimia than African American girls. On Entertainment Tonight, there were countless reports where overweight caucasian women complained about a movie or show that had been negative towards overweight people. In contrast, they would show the actress/comedienne, Mo’Nique, talking about how her double chin paid for her children’s college tuition and her rolls paid for her car and for her house. She was so open about her weight and has written books with names like “Skinny Women are Evil.” She even made a movie last year called “Phat Girlz.”

Latina women are constantly praised for their figures. For a time, Jennifer Lopez was more praised for her big bottom for her acting or singing talents. Salma Hayek made a sexy entrance in Robert Rodriguez’s From Dusk til Dawn. Jessica Alba is only part Latina, but her body has been embraced because of her roles in Fantastic Four, Sin City and Into The Blue.

It used to be a big thing when Bo Derek was running down the beach in the movie Ten. But, the female body has been admired for generations beforehand. Women are made to be beautiful, sexy and soft things with bodies made for childbirth. We suffer the pain for it, so it should be a pleasure to have a nice body. It is very easy for admiration to become objectification, or criticism. All women are made differently and every woman knows that when we hit the age of 30, our metabolism slows. The female body image should be more appreciated than it is, so young girls that are becoming women won’t fall into the traps of being objectified or getting an eating disorder. Let’s praise women like Dita Von Teese, who’s real name is Heather Sweet, for her natural body or Mo’nique for her confidence. A new day is dawning for women.
