Telemarketing: The Tricks of the Trade

I have been doing telemarketing all my adult life. It has become a stable income for me. There are so many jobs out there in this field that virtually anyone can make a living do this.

Currently I am working for a charity setting up donation pick-ups. I work exclusively from home and make my own hours. I have been doing this for the past four years and make anywhere from six hundred to eight hundred and fifty dollars a month. I started out in this field working part time in the evenings after my full time job. I was looking to make a few extra bucks and soon discovered that this came very easy to me.

After about a year I starting thinking of doing this in a full time capacity. At first it didn’t work so I went back to part time and slowly built my skills up to the point that I was able to do this full time. If you are interested in working from home there are many charities looking for solicitors to do just that. For example there is “The Bargain Barn”, “The Kidney Foundation”, “Help Handicapped Veterans”, “Vietnam Veterans”, “United Volunteers” to name a few.. All or good organizations. I have tried every trick in the book to speed up the process in getting my quotas and setting higher quotas for myself. Here are my best tips and secrets of the trade to make the job quicker and more efficient for you.

The most important tip I can offer you is that it is extremely important to keep a positive attitude even when your not feeling it. The tone of your voice comes across to the person on the other end. This person will know immediately if you are into your job or not. Do not take negative responses personally. I have learned to say “Thank You” and quickly move on.

The first thing to remember is that this is a numbers game. It is all about making contact with the people who will be at home during your calling time. Rule of thumb is to allow the phone to ring four times and then move on. I never leave messages. Talking to people one on one is more direct than leaving a message and you will get a direct answer of yes or no.

For the best results, call your entire list the first time through during off peak hours. Peak hours are five to nine p.m. I consider my first call through the list as my “clean up effort”. I am getting rid of all the bad numbers meaning the disconnected numbers, people that do not want to be called etc. Once you are able to get through the entire list you will be ready for peak hours. This will save you valuable time by doing this. It is the easiest to reach people during peak hours and you don’t want to waste it with phone numbers that will not produce for you. Keep in mind that the key to this business is to reach people when they are at home and that is in the evening and all weekend long.

For me Sunday has always been the absolute best day to reach the most people. I have set up as many as eighty pick ups on a Sunday. Go through your list as many times as you feel comfortable in attempting to contact your people without making them feel like you are hounding them. I average 150-240 pick ups a week with these tips. This is a great way to make extra money without ever having to leave the comfort of your home. Try it, you may find yourself doing this full time too!
