Teachers Lesson Plan for Jackie Robinson

Branch Rickey, Differentiated Instruction, Jackie Robinson

Objective – The students will be able to:
Identify pronouns in a sentence (Grammar)
Compare & Contrast baseball of the past to baseball of today. (ELA)
Organize the Sequence of Events. (ELA)
Match the Cause to the correct Effect. (ELA)
Summarize what they learned about Jackie Robinson. (ELA)
Work in pairs.

Motivational Activity – The students will be shown pictures of different baseball teams and players. They will answer the following higher order thinking skill questions on a handout:

What is your first reaction when you see the pictures?

Can you describe what you see?

What are the similarities/differences?

Do you think you would like to be a baseball player?

Do Now Activity – The students will be given a handout upon entering the classroom. This will be the Grammar Component of the lesson. The students will replace each underlined word or phrase with the correct Pronoun. I will use sentences strips on the board.

Background Knowledge – Students will have already read the story Teammates by Peter Golenbock in the High Point Text on pages 104-112.

Vocabulary Activity – In the High Point Textbook on page 104, the students will read the paragraph and replace each underlined word with a vocabulary word that means the same. I will pass out a handout for each student to fill in. I will have the paragraph on a piece of chart paper and the students will fill in the blanks.

Sequence of Events Activity (ELA) – I will put “Teammates” transparency on the overhead projector. Each student will also receive a handout with the reading passage. They will first read silently and then I will pick volunteers to read out loud. They will work in pairs and will complete the sequence of events activity. They will put the events in order of when they took place. I will have sentence strips on the board.

Cause and Effect Activity (ELA) – I will pass out a handout that will have a matching exercise. The students will have to match the cause with the correct effect. I will have sentence strips on the board.

Closure – Sum it up. What have we learned today?

Assessment – First for an informal assessment I will pass out a mini handout called the “TICKET OUT”. I will pose one higher order thinking question to sum up what they learned. The question will be “How did Branch Rickey, Jackie Robinson, and Pee Wee Reese change baseball forever?” They will hand it to me on their way out. For a formal assessment at the end of the Unit, the students will take Selection Test 7 from the High Point Series.

Extension – For an extension of this lesson, the class will learn about Rosa Parks. She was famous for not moving her seat to the back of the bus.

Classroom Atmosphere – Word wall of Vocabulary Words

Differentiated Instruction – Students will go to the library and pick out a book that teaches them about baseball from the past, Jackie Robinson, baseball in the present, women in baseball, etc. They will pick a book that is on their reading level. Each student will have different levels picked. They will do a book report on it.
