If black hair salon prices made you go one too many weeks without a relaxer, head on over to Suite 20 in Decatur. They bill themselves as “The Home of the $10 ‘Do.” What they can’t fit in is that they are also professional, quick and leave your hair healthy and lovely.
How can they Do It?
A $10 wash and set by professionals? How can they do it? They do it through volume and their organization. There is a system and the system works. Think of it as kind of an assembly line more than a black hair salon.
Another way costs are kept low is that the services are set up ala cart. A wash and set is $10. If you want a trim, that will be an additional $5. Deep condition?Add another $5. This allows you to get what you want without paying for the extras that you could do without.
Appointments
No appointments. Walk-ins only on a first come – first served basis.
What to Expect
When you first enter the salon, you’ll be given a form to complete and a colored ticket. The colored ticket will have what services you want circled. It will also have the name of the requested stylist. You then sit in a nice waiting room with a television until a shampoo technician comes to get you. You give the slip to the shampoo tech.
After your hair is washed, you sit in a room with your wet hair under a shower cap until it is your turn to be served. You can request a stylist. Requesting a stylist, however, will cause a longer wait.
If you’re getting a relaxer touch-up, you go straight to the stylists’ room to wait your turn. The $30 for a touch-up comes with a deep conditioning treatment. You leave with your hair wrapped. If you want a style, that is an extra $10.
The Atmosphere
It was quiet and professional. Soft, gospel music played in the background. The receptionists were friendly.
Best Times to Go
Avoid Saturdays at all costs if you want a touch-up. The best day is Tuesday. The salon is open every day of the week. You should be able to find a time to suit you. Both times my mom had a wash and set during the week, she was done within an hour
Parking
Ample parking is behind the salon.
Impressions
I tried Suite 20 on the recommendation of my mom. I went in for a touch-up on a Saturday and left three hours later. I take total responsibility for having such a long wait. What was I thinking going to a black hair salon on a Saturday morning?
Also, it appeared that the owner was steering clients who wanted touch-ups to certain stylists thereby increasing the wait. My suspicion is that he wanted the more experience stylists to handle the chemicals for new clients. Smart business decision.
I didn’t mind waiting because the stylist did an excellent job at a cut rate price! I will definitely be back and next time on a Tuesday!
