Love-themed movies are often cute, sweet, mushy, comical at times, heartbreaking now and then, but most importantly they are dependable when it comes to providing momentary cheer and relief. Ladies (or the occasional gentleman), here are the movies to look forward to in 2011.
1. No Strings Attached (January 21) – Starring Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher, this is one high-profile movie that’s expected to bring in the big bucks just based on the stars alone. One can get the premise just with the title alone: two people who are in a purely physical relationship are in the dilemma of keeping their emotions in check. Of course, you can see the ending coming a mile away, but the excitement is how their story unfolds. The funny trailer with the beautiful and charming Natalie Portman will most probably make your boyfriend/husband tag along.
2. Just Go With It (February 11) – A-list stars Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman and Adam Sandler may just be enough reason for people to see this flick. If you’re still interested in the plot at all, it’s about a successful plastic surgeon, played by Sandler, who pursues women by pretending to be unhappily married. Chaos ensues when he tries to be himself with the woman of his dreams, played by model Brooklyn Decker, but she discovers the wedding band prop he uses. He then had his office manager (Aniston) pose as his ex-wife then lies after lies follow. It is an appealing enough premise to make it a big hit come Valentine’s Day.
3. What’s Your Number (April 29) – This comedy flick starring Anna Faris and Chris Evans might have a harder time finding an audience than the previous movies. A woman, played by comedic actress Faris, goes on a journey in finding her one true love from the twenty men she’s had relationships with in the past. Ryan Philippe, Zachary Quinto, and Joel McHale co-stars.
4. Something Borrowed (May 6) – Romantic comedy favorite Kate Hudson plays best friend to lead Ginnifer Goodwin in this movie based on the 2005 chick lit novel by Emily Giffin. The story revolves around Rachel (Goodwin) who is single and facing the dilemma of falling for her best friend’s fiance. Expectations are high for the readers who loved the book, so it is intriguing to see how this movie will fare.
5. Bad Teacher (June 17) – This film stars old sweethearts Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake. Diaz plays a foul-mouthed high school teacher who after being dumped, decides to pursue a new colleague. The plot doesn’t sound too engaging but it will be interesting to see the chemistry between the former couple on the big screen. Jason Segel co-stars.
6. Monte Carlo (July 1) – This anticipated movie stars up and coming actresses Leighton Meester, Katie Cassidy, Selena Gomez and Glee star Cory Monteith. In the film, three young women embark on an adventure that is only possible in movies: a Paris vacation turned into a fairy tale experience in Monte Carlo when one of them is mistaken for a British heiress. This sounds like the kind of movie for a girls movie night out: fun and lots of eye candy.
7. One for the Money (July 8) – It seems like the year wouldn’t be complete without a romantic comedy with Katherine Heigl in it. This time, she stars as Stephanie Plum, a well loved character from the best-seller novels created by Janet Evanovich. It follows the misadventures of woman in her thirties learning to become a bounty hunter. As a fan of the series, it’s difficult to picture Heigl as the funny and endearing Stephanie but I really hope she pulls it off because if not, she will disappoint a lot of people.
8. Friends with Benefits (July 22) – J.T. is surely invading the movie screens this year. This time, Timberlake stars opposite Mila Kunis and they both play professionals too busy to date so they agreed to be intimate with no strings attached. Are you having deja vu? Maybe because it’s the same plot as that Kutcher-Portman starrer with the January playdate. I wonder which one will be the more successful movie.
9. Wanderlust (October 7) – Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd star as a New York couple who are forced to leave their city lifestyle and live with family in Georgia, after the guy loses his job. Aniston and Rudd’s chemistry are already tested as they starred opposite each other in the 1998 “Object of My Affection”. I hope they can make a decent comedy out of this promising material.
