Review: Solid Gold Health Products for Pets

Natural Pet Food

Our society has put a lot of importance on using natural products in our daily living. We all try to eat more natural, healthy foods and we campaign for the “go green” in everything from the cleaners we use to the vehicles we drive.

So, should we put the same importance in the daily care and feeding of our faithful and loving pets. With all of the recent pet food recalls, and deaths of pets due to food contamination, we owe our pets the responsibility of searching out the best food and products we can for them. We need to know exactly what is in those cans and pouches that we trustfully open and feed to our pets.

Solid Gold is dedicated to just that mission, and has been for over three decades. The company was founded , in the United States, by Sissy Harrington McGill, in 1974. Sissy, who raised Champion American Danes, noticed that the German Danes seemed to have a longer, healthier life and attributed it to the “natural, healthier” food they were being fed. After researching and analyzing the European food, Sissy introduced the first all natural pet food in the U.S.

More than thirty years later, Solid Gold offers a full line of pet care products, for dogs and cats, including a wide variety of food, both canned and dry. Treats, nutritional supplements and skin care products, such as shampoos and conditioners are also part of the line of all natural, healthy products available for pets.

Solid Gold foods contain no salt, beet pulp, fillers, by-products or artificial flavoring. It’s not preserved by harmful chemicals, but instead uses a natural antioxidant to protect against spoilage. You won’t find any wheat gluten in Solid Gold food. Gluten is the ingredient that sparked some of the major recalls in the past.

Solid Gold offers a wide variety of food to fit the pickiest little eater, to the huge chow hound, all packaged with clearly recognizable, and easy to read labels. Ingredients are easy to understand when it’s things like, lamb, brown rice, barley, carrots, canola oil, cranberries, parsley, etc. Sounds like a doggy gourmet, doesn’t it?

Solid Gold’s nutritional products are top of the line as well. One of the many nutritional supplements they offer is a product called Sea Meal , for all dogs, cats and horses. It’s a mineral and vitamin supplement that is mixed with the food. They advertise it as an overall wellness supplement and offer various testimonies as to its tributes.

I personally feed the Solid Gold canned and dry food to my own adorable little Shih Tzu, and I use the Sea Meal daily. He is a happy healthy little guy that loves his “Just a Wee Bit” dry food that is packed with things like bison, salmon meal and brown rice. The tiny little bits of morsels fit him well. The Sea Meal is added to his “wet” food daily, (also Solid Gold canned food) and I truly believe it has helped not only his dry skin condition, but has helped ward off the many ear infections that Shih Tzu’s are prone to. Testimonies on the Solid Gold web site will also tout the many conditions that have been alleviated by using Solid Gold products.

As all good things sometimes have a down side to them, so does Solid Gold. The products are not that readily available except in select specialty pet stores, so you may have to search a little for them, but it is well worth the search. The items can also be ordered from the Solid Gold web site, but shipping costs are pretty expensive.

It’s best to find a grooming shop or pet store near you and ask them to stock Solid Gold pet products for you. Most of the pet food stores will gladly bring in a new product if that product will get them new customers. You can expect to pay a little more for Solid Gold than most of the other name brands cost, but in the long run, the little extra will pay for itself in many other ways. A happy healthy pet, means less trips to the vet, and hopefully, many more rewarding years with you and your family.
