Review: Pillsbury Refrigerated Pie Crusts

Food Writer, Pillsbury

While volunteering in the kitchen at a recent holiday event, one of my tasks was to bake an apple pie. All of the ingredients were donated by other members of the organization that I belong to, all I had to do was assemble the pie and bake it. The ingredients that I had to work with primarily consisted of canned pie filling and Pillsbury refrigerated pie crusts. That was the first time that I ever used this brand of pie crusts and I found the product to be of high quality and easy to work with.

The pie was enjoyable to make and took very little time to assemble. When it was fully baked, according to directions, the pie was golden – brown and maintained a delightful texture. I am so impressed with the flavor, convenience and overall quality of Pillsbury Pie Crusts, that I have decided to write a product review of them. Presented here, in an effort to assist the consumer, is one food writer’s product review of Pillsbury refrigerated pie crusts.

Size
The net weight of the container of Pillsbury Pie Crusts is 15 ounces. According to the package label, the container holds 16 servings. In physical size, the container takes up very little refrigerator space.

Taste / Flavor
When it comes to taste, Pillsbury Pie Crusts offer a very pleasant flavor that tastes very much like the flavor of homemade pie crust. Besides tasting like homemade pie crust, Pillsbury Pie Crusts are also not too sweet and they do not feature any type of fatty aftertaste, which is sometimes experienced with some other brands of prepared pie crusts. I like the flavor of these pie crusts so much, that I can’t wait to bake a pie at home, utilizing them. Although I have only made an apple pie with these crusts, I can tell by the flavor, that they would be great when used with any type of pie filling.

Texture
Before the apple pie was even baked, I could tell that the texture of the pie would be enjoyable. That is because the refrigerated crust maintains a nice, soft and even texture before it is cooked. The texture of the pie after the crust was baked was sensational. The crust was fairly soft, yet firm and it did not flake – off lots of crumbs. The texture of the Pillsbury Pie Crust married well with the fruit filling, providing for a very satisfying pie.

Price
The regular retail price charged for one 15 ounce package of Pillsbury Pie Crusts at Hartford, Connecticut area supermarkets is approximately $2.99. Considering the great flavor, texture and overall high quality of the crusts, I think that this price is reasonable.
