Review of the Idiot Proof 11 Day Diet

“How did you do it?”

“How did I do what?” I responded to the lady standing in the grocery store aisle.

I have had this conversation more than any other conversation in the last couple of months after having my third child. How did I do it? I did the same thing I always do after having a baby. I diet! But this time, I didn’t do Weight Watchers, because with three kids, counting points and attending meetings just wasn’t feasible. I didn’t do Nutrisystem, because again with three kids, it just was not in the budget, especially in the sinking economy. No, I didn’t even count calories or eat salads at every meal.

So what did I do? I found an online diet called the Idiot Proof Diet, also known as the Eleven Day Diet. The concept of this diet is not revolutionary, as it has been around for quite sometime. However, it hasn’t gained too much popularity and remains rather obscure. The diet allows you to pick certain foods from a list of items on their website that you can have. After picking the foods that you will eat, the website allows you to generate your diet menu. After all, who wants to be on a diet full of foods that you don’t particularly care for? You have to love what you’re eating or you will not stick with it.

The diet “rules” are quite simple. Eat as much as you want and eat the meals in any order that you want. However, you do not want to get full on any one meal and you do need to eat every two and a half to three hours to keep your blood sugar leveled throughout the day. You do not need to starve on this diet, and you should never really feel hungry, which is just another reason the diet works. If you are hungry, most likely it is time to eat again. You pick from a list of really filling foods, so hunger really doesn’t strike. You are allowed to drink tea and coffee on the diet as well as any other beverage consisting of ten calories or less per glass. I use a lot of Splenda so that I don’t have to sacrifice my favorite beverages. There are also a list of “free” condiments that you can add to any meal. I have always been a mayonnaise fan, but since it is technically a “no-no”, I have learned to switch to mustard!

How does the diet work? The website suggests that the diet works by “tricking your metabolism” by eating different amounts of calories every day. Also, by keeping insulin levels low, your metabolism works harder and burns calories faster.

The diet recommends that you do two thirty minute sessions of cardio every day, or if that is too much, just do one forty-five minute session. I usually walk on the treadmill for about five miles and do Winsor Pilates five days a week. Pilates is especially great after having a baby to lengthen the muscles and give you your silhouette back. Plus, Pilates is very relaxing which is great when you have a new baby in the house. The best part is most of Mary Winsor’s dvds are about twenty minutes long, so it can fit into any new mommy’s schedule. I have actually started craving my workout, and on my “off days” I am actually sad that I don’t get to work out, because I just feel so much better after having the relaxing workout.

I don’t know all the technicalities of the diet, but I do know it works. I know that I am not starving while on the diet, and I get to eat foods that I love. I have literally been sitting on the couch or lying in bed and I can feel the fat melting off of me, which is a pretty amazing feeling. I have done this diet several times in eleven day intervals to get rid of a few “extra’ pounds and always manage to drop a dress size within the time frame.

The best part about this diet is after the eleven days, you get a a three day “cheat period” in which you can eat whatever you want. However, my body feels so good when I eat the recommended foods during the diet that on my off days, I have a hard time eating pizza, burgers, and other “junk”.
