Red Wine Review: Hess Select Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

Best Summer Wine, Cabernet, Cabernet Sauvignon, Summer Wines

Creating a name for the Hess Wine Collection, this Cabernet Sauvignon is not only an award winning wine but also a wine enthusiast’s favorite selection from California. It is a red wine that will make a great addition to any carnivore dinner party or sipped on a cooler night sitting outdoors on the patio.

Coming straight from the state of California on American soil, this red wine has been winning tasting awards since 1987 by Wine Spectator’s 100 Top Wines of the World. This is a remarkable award of achievement since the winery was created in 1978, just nine years before the tasting awards started rolling in to the Hess Collection. Donald Hess, owner and operator of the Hess Wine Collection has a truly great hand in the wine market and knows his wines from around the world.

The Hess Select Cabernet Sauvignon vintages are from the esteemed estate among the slopes of Mr. Veeder in the Napa Valley wine country. Similar to its competitors in the Bordeaux region in France, each cabernet sauvignon vintage is fermented and then aged for around 22 to 24 months in new, French oak barrels. Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the most popular grape varieties favored around the world today, which consists of smooth flavor additive of merlot and a cabernet franc that adds a nice bouquet.

My family always tries to find a good Cabernet Sauvignon wine since it has healing powers against many diseases. In fact, The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology published an article in 2006 about the effects of reducing Alzheimer’s disease by just drinking cabernet sauvignon wine. Basically, all red wine contains resveratrol (a compound that is known to reduce levels of amyloid beta peptides) which helps in the preventative measures against this disease.

Not being a true fan of red wines, upon opening the bottle, I was preparing myself for a strong tannic flavor that makes your mouth pucker and feel dry while remembering the healing powers it contains. I was not surprised that this wine was what I was expecting. My husband on the other hand felt that this wine was a wonderful selection for a ‘mountain wine’. It has a strong tannic taste with a slight blueberry and milk chocolate flavor that hits the middle- palate. Although, as a white wine lover, I was not into the award-winning red wine however my husband is in love with this wine. It does have a strong red wine taste, so new wine drinkers may not enjoy this red wine as much as a seasoned red wine lover.

This wine, coming in around $15.29 per bottle however will be a great selection for dinner parties that are serving red meat. Again, this is not for your average white wine drinker, it is for seasoned drinkers only. It can be aged for around five more years though, so if you really want to get the healing benefits from this wine, aging will diminish the strong tannic flavor and make it more of a desired smooth taste. It will be great for those summer Barbecue parties or elegant dinner parties indoors.
