Rainy Day Project for Kids – Make a Robot!

Toilet Paper Tubes

Summer is careening to a close and the kids may just be getting a little bored with the park, the pool and their bicycles. You may be shooing them outside to enjoy the last days of summer. If a rainy day comes your way, gather together some simple items you already have in your home and let the kids use their vast imaginations to make their own robot! For this project, you will need:

Aluminum Foil
Two empty cardboard boxes of different sizes
Thick colored tape
Four empty toilet paper rolls
Twine
Scissors
Magic Marker

Cover the boxes with aluminum foil. Tell the kids to wrap the boxes as though they were wrapping presents. Place the smaller box on top of the larger box and use the thick tape to attach. The smaller box is the head and the larger box is the body.

Cut four pieces of twine about six inches in length. Tape each piece of twine to the inside of an empty toilet paper tube. Tape the opposite ends of the twine of two toilet paper tubes to the sides of the bottom box. This is your robot’s arms.Tape the twine ends of the remaining paper towel rolls to the bottom of the large box. This is your robot’s legs.

Now it is time to decorate your robot. We covered our robot’s head with wide blue tape and then my daughter drew a face with a magic marker. This is the simplest way to decorate your robot. You can make your robot much fancier using stickers, buttons or anything else you may have on hand. You can use the twine to give your robot hair or a mustache. A bow attached to the type makes a cute girl robot. You can expand upon this simple robot design in countless ways and let your children’s imaginations go wild! Perhaps they would like to decorate their robot to resemble a favorite animal or even someone they know. Surprise Daddy when he gets home with a robot that looks just like him!

It can be difficult to keep the kids entertained on a rainy summer day. This project enables them to use their imaginations to design and decorate their robots in any way they choose, and it is constructed from items you already have in the house. The finished robot sits and dangles his legs so you can put him up on a shelf later to admire. Have some fun with the kids and enjoy making your own robot!
