Product Review: Alka-Seltzer Plus Mucus & Congestion Tablets – Lemon Lime Flavor

Alka Seltzer, Congestion, Dextromethorphan, Flu Remedies, Mucus

It’s the Cold and Flu Season again. If you can manage to stay healthy throughout the next several months, then, good for you! You must be doing something right! According to medical statistics, most adults get three colds a year; kids get a whopping six to ten colds annually. Head colds can be annoying, but chest colds- with their symptoms of lung congestion, coughing, and maybe even wheezing and muscle soreness- can really impair normal breathing. To help relieve heavy congestion and mucus, Alka-Seltzer Plus Mucus & Congestion Tablets- Lemon Lime really does the trick!

Product Description
Alka-Seltzer has long been a leader when it comes to over-the-counter cold and flu remedies. Now, Bayer Healthcare LLC has come up with a remedy to “relieve heavy chest congestion, thin and loosen mucus, and quiet coughs.” Alka-Seltzer Plus Mucus & Congestion Tablets- Lemon Lime reminds me of the Alka-Seltzer I used to drink years ago squelch an upset stomach and heartburn. But, this formula contains ten milligrams of Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide
and two hundred milligrams of Guaifenesin per does. The former is a cough suppressant, and the latter is an expectorant. This product does not contain aspirin.

Price and Availability
A twenty-tablet box of Alka-Seltzer Plus Mucus & Congestion Tablets- Lemon Lime is available at most drug stores and pharmacies. I paid around five dollars for a box at Wal-Mart.

Warnings
Of course, not every over-the-counter product is for everyone. If you’re pregnant or you’re breastfeeding, you can’t take this product. Children under age twelve shouldn’t take it either unless it’s prescribed by a doctor. And, according to the box, “Do not use if you are taking a prescription monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (certain drugs for depression, psychiatric, or emotional conditions, or Parkinson’s disease), or for 2 weeks after stopping the MAOI drug. If you do not know if your prescription drug contains an MAOI, ask a doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.”

Some people can actually experience adverse side effects when they take Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide and/or Guaifenesin, so they should avoid it as well.

Also, there’s another warning on the box of Alka-Seltzer Plus Mucus & Congestion Tablets- Lemon Lime stating that you should “consult a doctor before use if you have cough with excessive phlegm (mucus), persistent or chronic cough such as occurs with smoking, asthma, chronic bronchitis, or emphysema, and a sodium-restricted diet.” Each tablet contains 296 milligrams of sodium.

And finally, you should “Stop use and ask a doctor if cough lasts more than 7 days, comes back, or is accompanied by a fever, rash, or persistent headache. These could be signs of a serious condition.”

Test Results
Taking Alka-Seltzer Plus Mucus & Congestion Tablets- Lemon Lime couldn’t be easier! All you do is drop two of the effervescent tablets into four ounces of water. Let them dissolve a few seconds- I stir it up with a spoon to mix it well- and drink it down. Repeat the process every four hours, but don’t take more than eight tablets in a twenty-four hour period- and you’ll soon feel relief.

Conclusion
I highly recommend taking Alka-Seltzer Plus Mucus & Congestion Tablets- Lemon Lime. It will help reduce congestion and mucus from your chest, make you cough less and help you sleep better. I don’t think you feel over-medicated or groggy when you take it, which is a definite plus.

A word of caution, though- do not take Alka-Seltzer Plus Mucus & Congestion Tablets- Lemon Lime unless you have heavy chest congestion. Otherwise, it will dry your bronchial tubes, et cetera, up too much.

And, don’t forget NOT to store this in your bathroom. The tablets can easily draw dampness and moisture. Store these tablets instead in their original container in a cool, dry place. Finally, keep them away from children.
