Poodle Skirt Costume Ideas and Tips

Blue Eye Shadow, Keds

The poodle skirt costume is very popular amongst sock hops, and other costume parties. After all it is a fun way to capture everyones attention. Poodle skirts have been around for years but, what do you where with the skirt? Here are some tips that will have you looking your best at the hop.

MAKE-UP:

Light blue eye shadow, ruby red lips, and rouge are a thing of the past…and that’s why they all look great worn with poodle skirts. If your fair complected wear a darker shade of pink lipstick instead of red. Be sure to use lots of black mascara to make your eyes pop.

HAIR:

If you have long hair, put it in a ponytail. Use an old sheer vintage scarf to tie around the ponytail, letting the ends hand down. If you have short hair you can use a sheer scarf to tie around your head like a hair band. If you just don’t like the look if a scarf tied in you hair, you and tie it around your neck instead, letting the ends drape in front of your shoulder.

NAILS:

Light pink nail polish looks the best. It will match your skirt, without taking away from your costume.

SHIRTS:

There are several different shirts you can wear with a poodle skirt. The first is a waist length, short sleeve, lightweight sweater. If you do not have one it’s alright. You can also wear a tank top that matches your skirt with a white cotton button up shirt over it. Mens button up dress shirts work great. Do not button the shirt, instead tie the bottom of it at the waist of the poodle skirt. If you have a larger chest you want to cover up, button a few of the buttons above the tie. Next roll the sleeves up a little past your elbows. Make sure your belly is covered. Your poodle skirt costumes just won’t look right if your belly is showing.

SOCKS:

Bobby socks look great with your poodle shirk. You can use your regular crew socks and no one can tell the difference. If you do not have any crew socks your not out of luck. Most of us have at lease one pair of tube sock which you can cuff down. No matter what you do, you want your sock to be at least 1 inch over the heel of your shoes.

SHOES:

Have a pair of black, and white oxfords? If you do, then great. If not, do not go buy a pair. Oxfords will cost you a pretty penny, and that’s money you could spend on other things. Bo-Bo’s make great alternatives. You can find generic white Bo-Bo’s for a couple of dollars at any discount store such as Walmart. However, if your into name brands, KEDS make a great plain white Bo-Bo that cost around $20.00. Keep in mind these a simple lace up tennis shoes that you can wear year round.

JEWELRY:

There is no need to fancy yourself up with jewelry. Your costume says it all. If you have a piece of jewelry that you never take off, then feel free to wear it. A watch will also help you keep track to time, without taking away from your poodle skirt.

PURSE:

From time to time all of us ladies need to carry a purse. Actually, a purse is great for storing your lipstick, a cell phone, and other items we can’t live without. If you must carry a purse, make sure it is something simple and small. A plain colored matching wrist bag looks great, and won’t get in the way. Just make sure you don’t choose a large purse, or a purse with bold colors, and prints. You want the skirt to be the main focus of your costume.
