Poetry: How to Write a Great Rhyming Poem

Death Poem, Rhyming Poetry

Poetry is a wonderful form of expression. It takes words and puts them together in an emotional arrangement, a melody of words and thoughts, if you will. Writing a poem is not hard to do. I have written hundreds of poems, rhyming and non rhyming alike. Rhyming poetry will always be my favorite however and now I’d like to show you how to write a great rhyming poem…

There are only a handful of things you will need to create a rhyming poem. First of course you’ll need some paper. You’ll want several sheets of draft paper and then a few of nice quality paper. Or, a computer. If you’re using paper you’ll need a pencil and a pen. A pencil with an eraser is best for drafts. A pen, even a fancy calligraphy pen, is great for a neat and graceful handwritten final completed poem. A computer eliminates the needs for writing tools! It is also nice to have both a dictionary and a thesaurus. They can both come in very handy when you come across a word that is hard to rhyme with. Next you’ll need a space and a place. Somewhere quiet and peaceful. Somewhere where there are no distractions. Somewhere where your thoughts can flow. That leaves us with just one thing left that’s needed…an idea.

When you have everything else all you lack is a thought. What will your poem be about? Love? Hate? Life and living? Death and grieving? What is the emotion you are feeling? Is the poem for your spouse or a child? How you feel is why you choose to write the poem in the first place. Do you feel sorry for a fight with your spouse and wish to apposite with a love poem? Is it your child’s birthday and you’d like to write a joyful poem to let her know how much you care? Have you just lost a loved one and wish to write a poem to remember them by, or for grieving? There are limitless occasions and emotions to base a poem on. To write a poem though you need to choose one!

Let’s say you’d like to write an anniversary poem to your spouse. My anniversary is coming up so that sounds great! What is the first thing you’d like to say to your spouse? The first thing that comes to mind is love. Put words to your feelings and thoughts. On a piece of your scrap paper write down the words that come to your mind. Love. Devotion. Eternity. Togetherness. Trust. Time spent. Holding each other. Desire. Passion. Longing. See? Groups of words and single words. Now, you’re poem will be based on these words.

Now take each word or group of words and create a sentence of sorts with it. For love…My love for you is forever. For devotion…I devote to you all of my heart. For eternity…Together for eternity. See? Little sentences about each word or group of words. Then once you’re done with all of your word sentences you can put them into poem form by expanding them with another little sentence comparable and rhyming.

Example: Love…My love for you is forever, We will always be together.

Eternity…Together for eternity, you and I will surely be.

Devotion…I devote to you all of my heart, as I have right from the start.

Once you finish with all of yours you will have a rhyming poem that has been written straight from your heart. Once you are done with your poem it’s time to create the final draft. Poems are special and deserve to look nice, pretty even. If you handwrite it do so very neatly. On the computer you can use a fancy font. Some people like to frame and matt their finished final drafts. Poems can be nicely given as gifts this way.
