Places to Adopt a Cat in Delaware

Healthy Pets, Pet Shops

A cat is a wonderful and graceful animal and often can turn a house into a home for a person or family. Since there are lots of strays out there lots of cats and kittens do not have homes. People who do not spay or neuter their cats also magnify this problem. When people want a cat a good place to look is to adopt one from an animal shelter. Oftentimes when someone wants a cat or kitten they look to a pet shop. This is a bit of a mistake. For one thing you can almost always find someone giving kittens and cats away. You also can find them at shelters that need a good home and love.

There are three main places that you can adopt a cat or kitten at in Delaware. They are Faithful Friends, The Delaware Humane Association, and the SPCA. The animals are checked for health and often have some if not all of their shots, so you get a pretty good deal. One thing that I think is important to realize is that a kitten is only a kitten for a few months, but adult cats are adults for years. All of these shelters inform people that it can be beneficial to look at the older cats and not just immediacy decide to adopt a kitten. The adult cats also typically know some of the rules of a house and are litter box trained. A kitten may not be and can be destructive until taught the rules of the house.

The first shelter that I will discuss is Faithful Friends. They have dogs and cats as well as the occasional rabbit, but cats are their main pet offered for adoption. Some of the cats are kept at their facility, but others stay in “foster” care with volunteers until they find adoptive families. They are a non profit organization and rely on donations and grants for the work that they do. The fees for adopting kittens are $50 for a cat five years of age or older, $65 for a cat up to four years old, $85 for a kitten. They also offer volume discounts if multiple pets are adopted. They are located at 12-1 Germany Drive Wilmington, De 19804. You can call them at 302-324-8514

The next shelter to talk about is the Delaware Humane Association. Like Faithful Friends, it is a non-kill shelter. This means the animals stay there until they are adopted or die. The Delaware Humane Association also operates off of donations and grants and the work of volunteers. They do have a paid staff as well though. They have dogs and cats available for adoption and all the animals for adoption are typically on the site, so you can see the animal and not just a picture. As far as cats go, they have a room with a large amount of cats in it that you can go in to play with them. One day me and my wife went there and one was boxing with me. She was adorable and reminded me of my departed kitten holly. The animals receive regular shots and vet check ups and are typically in great health. They also spay or neuter all of the animals. Two close friends of mine have adopted cats from there and have great loving additions to their families. Their adoption fees are $40 for an adult cat and $100 for a kitten. They also offer discounts when you adopt more than one cat or kitten. They are located at 701 A Street Wilmington, Delaware 19801. You can call them at 302-571-0111. I have heard nothing but good things about the pets that friends of mine have gotten from them.

The final shelter to profile is the Delaware Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Unfortunately they do euthanize animals that they cannot place in homes. They do accept donations, but are run by the state of Delaware. They also offer micro chipping services and spay and neutering services to the general public at very good discounts. They have dogs and cats available for adoption as well as rabbits. The animals are spayed or neutered and are generally in good health. I do think that they have more healthy pets at both Faithful Friends and the Delaware Humane Association. Their adoption fees do vary, but generally you can adopt a cat for $50 and a kitten for $80. They are located at 455 Stanton Christiana Road Newark, Delaware 19713. You can call them at 302-998-2281

There are some studies that show that pets can help people live longer and more happily with a better quality of life. If you want a pet why not look for one that needs a home? You will spend just about the same amount in pet shops. It is also worth nothing that some pet shops do not take the best care of their animals. Not all shops are like that, but some are.
