The first steps to have the kids start helping you cut stars and stripes from tissue paper or construction paper. They can make a whole pile of their cut outs and then start creating.

The stars and stripes in this patriotic craft project should be blue and red and white, but of course, let the kids be creative!

Now, you and the kids need to thoroughly wash out their empty food jars with soap and water.

Let the jars dry completely.

I like to use old pickle jars and spaghetti jars for this craft project. They are just the right shape to hold a pillar candle.

Now, use the paintbrush to paint some decoupage medium on the front of the American Flag cut outs.

I recommend starting with the stripes, use the red stripes first.

Have the kid’s reach their small hands in to the jar and place them facing out.

Now, use the paintbrush dipped into decoupage to paint on the backside of the red American flag cut outs.

Continue this process around the entire inside of the empty food jar.

Now, add the white stripes. Don’t forget to leave room for the stars!

Tip: for a twist on the traditional American flag try cutting the stars out of blue paper. Decoupage them in the jar first. Now, behind them add the red and white stripes!

Now, let the decoupage medium dry completely.

Cut of a piece of Ribbon that is about 2 feet long. Tie this around the ridges at the top of the empty food jar. Look for red, white, or blue ribbon. You can also use American flag ribbon.

You can tie it off in a beautiful bow or even tuck in the rough edges and glue them down.

Fill the bottom 2 inches of the newly decorated American Flag Candle Votives with some sand. Any kind of sand will do.

Now, place the candle inside. Be sure to set on a flat and stable surface before you light the candle.

Now you can use this simple and beautiful patriotic craft project on your patio this Fourth of July and really show your love of America!
