Painting Your Walls in Ombre

Ombre, Paint Rollers

Ombre, a French word that means shaded or graduated tone, is so popular right now that you’ll see it applied almost anywhere from makeup to hair color, textiles and confections. So, it comes as no surprise that it’s also often used in interior decorations. One way to apply it to your home’s interior is through wall paint. Although the method is more time consuming than just painting your wall with one color, the outcome is so rewarding.

Methods of Application

Applying different gradients of color paint on your wall in horizontal fashion by using painter’s tape to divide each section is one of the ways you can get an ombre effect on your walls. You can either divide your walls in even or uneven sections, where the color becomes stronger and deeper as the size becomes bigger. It’s common to see the different tones of the same color applied from pale to dark instead of from dark to pale. Use paint swatches as your guide in painting horizontal ombre. Paint rollers are the preferred instruments in this application for ease and speed. By using tape to divide each gradient, you’ll end up with clean lines that’s works well in a minimalist style.

Another way of applying ombre paint on your walls is by using a method similar to painting with water color by using paint brush instead of paint rollers. Allow each color to overlap each other enough to blend the bottom part of the lighter color to the top part of the darker color. This paint technique is freehand and doesn’t need painter’s tape as guide. Use a primer in similar tone as the ones you’ll choose for the ombre effect. Often lighter in color, a primer can be left exposed on the top part of the wall. It can act as the starting point as you apply the different shades. If you choose to paint over the primer on the top part of the wall, use a similar light color to keep it pale.

Using geometric patterns is a fun way to add ombre to your walls. Choose chevron, fish scales or diamond patterns to give your walls more pizzazz. Geometric ombres are more time consuming to achieve. If you don’t have the patience, you could purchase wallpapers in different ombre styles that will suit your needs.

Leaving an ombre wall bare will allow you to take full advantage of its beauty. Like a big canvas painting that hang wall to wall. If you prefer to add artwork, keep it minimal and use the same color family so that it blends well with the walls. Remember-your ombre wall should take center stage. You’re not taking advantage of your wall’s ombre effect if you cover it with numerous, clashing art pieces.

Rooms Best Suited for Ombre

You can apply ombre effect on any wall in your home, provided that wall is prominent so that you can admire the beauty of this paint technique. Choose taller and wider walls for best visual effect. A bedroom wall directly adjacent to the bed painted in blue ombre gives you a tranquil effect, reminiscent of the sea. Use bolder and brighter colors, such as red, orange or yellow in playrooms and dark basements to keep the rooms bright and vibrant. A focal wall such as above the fireplace can make the ombre paint stand out and worthy of a masterpiece.
