Orlando Apartment Review: Azur at Metrowest

Azur at Metrowest, formerly Colonial Grand

When I moved to Orlando back in 1998 I remember seeing what was then called the Colonial Grand apartments. More than that, I wanted to live there. They had a beautiful black iron fence that encapsulated the property. The grounds were meticulously manicured and the apartments were painted in complimentary Tuscan colors. Each apartment was two stories and the community was small enough to be cozy and inviting.

However, at the time I was unable to afford to live at Colonial Grand. Believe me, I looked into it. Colonial Grand Apartments as it was known then, is located in Metrowest. This was an up and coming place in Orlando. Absolutely gorgeous houses and apartments surrounded by a plush green golf course. It was considered a very trendy place to live. As a young twenty-something, it was the place to be and socialize.

It wasn’t until several years later that I finally achieved my dream of living at Colonial Grand in Metrowest. By this time I was almost out of my twenty’s with a young daughter to take care of. It was in the middle of a time when many of the apartments in Metrowest were turning into condominiums. The apartment I was living in was also in Metrowest and when they turned into condos I needed to find an apartment.

We moved into a one bedroom with a loft in Colonial Grand. The apartment itself was very nice. It was plenty of room for the two of us. When you walked into the door, you were met immediately with a steep flight of stairs. I wasn’t too crazy about this as my daughter was still very young but I bough the gate guard and it worked fine. The first level had the bedroom, bathroom, dining, kitchen and living room. A second set of shorter stairs led to the loft. The ceilings were vaulted so it really made it seem a lot larger than it was. Overall, the apartment itself was nice.

My real issue was with the parking. What previously seemed like a cozy little neighborhood became too close for comfort. There wasn’t enough parking for every resident. Many times I had to park two to three buildings away. This is very difficult when trying to carry groceries with a toddler. That aspect was a big problem for me.

Now it is called the Azur at Metrowest. I don’t know if that is because they just changed the name or if they changed the name when they too converted to condominiums. Unfortunately, for some odd reason there has been an increase in crime in this once beautiful area of Orlando. It is no longer the young hip place to be as it once was but now the location for a lot of crime. It is such a shame to see it dwindle like that. It was a community that you could feel good about living in.
