In 1974, Jean Marie Faustin Godeffreid Havelange – who is known as Joao Havelange- was elected president of the FIFA. He is also the first Latin American to head the FIFA. Joao Havelange was reelected 5 times: 1978, 1982, 1986, 1990 and 1994.This gentleman speaks four foreign languages. From 1936 to 1952, he was an Olympic athlete. At the 1951 Pan American Games in Buenos Aires (Argentina), he won the silver medal in water polo.

Many Latin American fans will travel to the People’s Republic of China to attend the Olympic Football Tournament. During the Olympic Soccer Tournament in 1972, Iran defeated Brazil 1-0. Certainly, Brazil -FIFA world champion in 1970- suffered one of its most humillating defeats.

This nation won the Pan American Games in 1975. Four years later, Brazil successfully defended its title.
