Free Things to Do in Saginaw and Bay Counties During the Summertime

Saginaw, Summertime Activities

How many times have the kids or the adults for that matter said ” There is nothing to do” and you look in your wallet and think I can’t pay for another trip to the zoo, or amusement park? In both Saginaw and Bay counties there are many events, concerts, and places to go that do not cost anything.

Well, it will cost you a little gas money and a lawn chair as just about everything requires you to bring your own seating.

Starting in Saginaw County, there is the Lawn chair movies every Sunday Night beginning at dusk, located in the parking lot at the corner of Ames and North Hamilton. You take a lawn chair and the kids, in-laws, neighbors and enjoy a good movie outside.

The movies are every Sunday evening from June 17th, through August 19th. A complete list of the up coming movies is available at lawchairfilmfestival.com. In case of rain the movie is shown on Monday nights.

If music is more of what you are looking for then plan on attending the Saginaw Eddy Concert Band, every Sunday evening starting June 17th and running through Sunday August 5th. All the concerts begin at 7pm and again, you need to bring a lawn chair, the music and fun is on Saginaw’s Ojibway Island.

If it does happen to rain the concerts are moved to White Pine Middle School on Gratiot and Center in Saginaw Township.

Pride’s Friday Night live is a great place to take the whole family, this may cost you a little money if you want to eat but if you east before you go you can enjoy everything else for free. Every Friday from July 13th, 2007 through Friday August 17th, again you will need your lawn chair.

If you are looking for something to do during the day with the kids I recommend attending the Bay Arts Council Young People’s Series, I have gone just about every Wednesday for the past four summers. These outings range from harp players to drummers to a musical story theater. A blanket is recommended for this outdoor event.

The stage is raised and just about everyone sits on blankets and if you sit in a chair it makes it difficult for the people behind you to see. Many of the concerts have the children get up and join in the fun. Take a sack lunch the concerts begin at 11:30am every Wednesday from June 20th through August 15th. These last about 30 minutes and there isn’t much shade so apply sunscreen.

The local libraries in Saginaw county offer a summer reading program which, is also free, you just sign up young and old alike and read for 5 hours receive a water bottle, 10 hours of reading and you get a T-shirt. There are also many activities planned throughout the summer with Magic shows, drummers and singers. Check out the Saginaw Libraries web page for more information on those.

Along with all the above mentioned concerts and movies, you can visit one of the many parks in Saginaw County too, there is the, what is refereed to as the Crayon park on Fordney near the YMCA which, is completely fenced, the play scape on Wienke and also the park near Walmart on Bay Road. If you want to travel to Tittabawasse township the park out there is awesome too. Bay county also offers a great play scape on the river on Veterans Memorial Blvd.
