My Home Remedies for Constipation

Constipation Remedies, Laxatives

I have found that Dr. Pepper and eating a brownie, a Sonic Cheeseburger, and walking have helped me when I am feeling constipated. These three home remedies have replaced over-the-counter laxatives.

Dr. Pepper and Brownies

It never fails when I eat a couple of brownies and drink a Dr. Pepper, I have a BM. Sometimes this is a good thing; other times not so much. The times when it’s a good thing are days when I feel constipated. While this is too much sugar, it can beat Exlax or some other chemically engineered, over-the-counter, constipation medication.

I came across this sort of all-natural constipation home remedy completely by accident. I drank the soda and ate a brownie as a snack at work. The downside was it hit me on the way home from work. I was out in the middle of nowhere with no bathroom in sight since I had to drive more than half an hour each way to work. Be aware that you don’t want to use this one when you are going to be out with a long stretch without a bathroom to stop and use.

Sonic Cheeseburger

A Sonic Cheeseburger with the works is another accidental home remedy constipation reliever I came across. I haven’t decided if it’s the lettuce, onion, pickles, the grease, or a combination of all these things that work as a laxative.

In any event, eating a greasy cheeseburger, like the ones from Sonic, perhaps it can be an alternative for taking a laxative. This form of a home remedy laxative isn’t due to salmonella or food poisoning. I do know the difference between the two. It’s just one of those things that doesn’t happen every time I eat from this fast food place. It seems like it happens when I haven’t eaten my vegetables or had too much grease in my diet.

Walking

There have been times in my life when the items above, other home remedies, and over the counter laxatives won’t quite cut it. I have found doing a little walking does help a BM along. I don’t take a long walk to help with constipation because as Murphy’s Law would have it, something would go wrong in the worst way in this case.

A walk around the house, walking to the bathroom at work, or anything requiring me to walk just far enough helps the poop move on down my intestine. This is one of the reasons obstetricians have moms get up walking around after birth. At least that is what mine told me 25 years ago when I had my daughter. As for the men out there, just remember a little walking goes a long way when you need that little extra bit of help.

Before using any of my home remedies for replacing laxatives, I suggest consulting your doctor. Not only that, my home remedies will differ for everyone and are not suggested as a way to treat your constipation.
