Worship music, more than anything, brings me into God’s presence. Although God’s presence is always there, when I worship, I can almost feel God’s tender embrace. It is so powerful that at times I can’t help but tear up as God’s presence and love is poured out on me as I worship. I’m renewed, encouraged, and even healed on an emotional and spiritual level as I worship God through music.
Although there are many Christian music artists who write and perform worship songs, Chris Tomlin is one of my favorites. His songs are simple, but profound. They also tend to be easy to sing along with which makes them great for corporate worship. In fact, each of the 10 songs listed below are sung regularly in my church on Sunday mornings, and each of them have impacted my life during times of corporate and individual worship.

Why it’s meaningful: It takes my breath away when I think that the God of the universe is intensely interested in the details of my life. He is never too busy and is always ready and willing to spend time with me when I only slow down enough to talk to Him. On top of that, I never have to question His love and never have to worry that I might somehow lose His love; it’s constant and unfailing. There’s a great deal of security in God’s unfailing, unconditional love.

Why it’s meaningful: Everything that is good in my life, including all of my possessions and accomplishments are only possible because of the gifts, abilities, and opportunities God has given to me. Why it’s meaningful: Clean hands (which signify uncompromising actions) and pure hearts do not come naturally to anyone. True purity and holiness are not based on perfect behavior, but rather come about as lives are yielded to and transformed by a holy God. Since I cannot obtain clean hands and a pure heart on my own, it’s meaningful and absolutely vital to ask God to give me clean hands and a pure heart.

Why it’s meaningful: God’s grace is what enables me to stand before Him without fear. His grace is enough because it frees me from guilt and shame that would otherwise hinder me from being able to even stand in His presence.

Why it’s meaningful: Life is full of uncertainty. The only true stability in the entire universe is the God who never changes. Why it’s meaningful: In incredible simplicity, this song reminds me of God’s amazing greatness, and how nothing is too hard for him. It reminds me that He truly is above all things and that He is worthy of all my praise.

Why it’s meaningful: This is probably the most poetic Chris Tomlin song. It’s packed with beautiful imagery and meaning, and it reminds me of how truly amazing God is. It also reminds me of the fact that God knows every dirty little secret tucked into the private corners of my heart, and in spite of that, He loves me just as much as He would if I was perfect.

Why it’s meaningful: When I hear or sing this song, I’m reminded that no matter where I go, God’s presence and glory is right there with me. It fills every corner of the earth. Why it’s meaningful: The cross is the ultimate expression of God’s love, faithfulness, and perfection. It also illustrates one of the great paradoxes of Christianity: through death comes life.
