Spring comes late to the cites in the North, which makes Mother’s Day extra special. Start off the day with brunch at one of the Detroit area’s fine restaurants and spend the rest of Mother’s day enjoying the spring weather. Be sure to call ahead for resevations, even if they say reservations are not necessary. Better safe than sorry. Some of them will have special surprises for Mom, and there may be some changes to the menu, but you can get a good idea of what you will find.

The Whitney is in a Victorian brownstone and has the elegance that a house of that era deserves. The dress is classy and the brunch menu is a four course meal, a la carte. The price of $35.00 per person is very reasonable for what you get. There are not many items that most children would enjoy though. You get to chose from Cheese Marinated Feta Salad with Roasted Beets, Toasted Pine nuts and Tiny Mache or Organic Local Greens Salad with Crispy Pancetta and Maytag Bleu for the first course. The second and third courses have more choices such as Jumbo Shrimp with Crispy Polenta and Andouille Cream Sauce and Eggs Benedict with Grilled Chicken, Avocado and Bacon with Buttermilk Hollandaise or Blueberry Stuffed French Toast with Vermont Maple Syrup( third) Course four is dessert.

Union Street is a restaurant/bar with a business casual style. Their brunch menu is a la carte with all items below $20 and most below $10. You can choose between such diverse items as *Old School Eggs Benedist which is English muffin, grilled Canadian bacon, sautéed spinach,
poached eggs and Hollandaise sauce with fresh fruit cup for $9.95 and Lobster Frittata which is Maine lobster claw and tail meat, sautéed with shallots,

Most of the items like Crab Cakes and Eggs which is Two lightly poached eggs, two jumbo lump crab cakes, w Hollandaise, home fries, and a warm muffin for $9.95 are geared to adults, but the kid will enjoy the Waffle Nuggets w/ fresh chopped strawberries and dusted w/ a touch of confectioners sugar and warm maple syrup for
$5.95. Dress is business casual.

The prices at the Century Grille are very reasonable, they are very kid friendly and wheelchair accessible. The style is casual/elegant. The brunch is served a la carte and you can choose from Pancakes & Waffles such as the Century Grille Banana Pecan Waffle for $8, Century Platters such as Crab Benedict which is Toasted English muffin topped with jumbo lump crabmeat, two poached eggs, and hollandaise sauce. Served with home fried potatoes for $16,Omelets and Frittatas and Salads.

The Majestic Café has a great variety of dishes and is wheelchair accessible It is a bar scene, with a casual atmosphere and there are tables that are suitable for the family. The brunch menu is a la carte and you can start with something like Fresh Fruit, Yogurt with Honey, Nutmeg & Granola for $5.95 then move on to choices like Spinach and Beet Salad $6.50 and B.L.T. With Guacamole for $5.95. Don’t expect to find the normal breakfast items.
