Comerica Park – The Pride of Detroit

Tiger Stadium, Ty Cobb

Located in one of the most attractive urban areas of Detroit is a park, which acts as the heart of the city. This is Comerica Park, home of the 2006 American League Champions, the Detroit Tigers. The park was officially opened in April of 2000 as a replacement for the aging Tigers Stadium, where many great ball players including Al Kaline and Ty Cobb played ball. Comerica Park is located right next door to Ford Field, where the Detroit Lions play. The area is also filled with trendy restaurants, shops and urban office locations.

Comerica Park is a great place for the entire family to go. The Detroit Tigers is a team that cares about children. Having helped many of the Detroit area’s underprivileged children, the unique atmosphere at Comerica Park reflects the teams love for kids. From the carousel and Ferris wheel, with cars designed like baseballs, that are located in the heart of the Park, to the Sunday activities where kids get to run the bases after each game, every child will find something to love about Comerica.

Comerica Park is a baseball lover’s dream. The historical aspect of the field lies in the main concourse of Comerica. Here there is a museum that explores the history of the team through each decade. The field also has a special corner, Kaline Corner, located on the Pepsi Porch where many of the MLB’s best left handed hitters have hit homeruns. Kaline Corner is a seating area named specifically for Detroit’s great right fielder, Al Kaline. There are statues of the best Detroit players including Ty Cobb as well as those Tigers players whose jersey numbers have been retired. Left center field at Comerica also contains the names of these men with statues as well as all of the Hall of Famers who played most of their careers with Detroit.

Comerica Park is known for its spectacular Friday and Saturday fireworks shows and daily water fountain shows that are held before and after each game. There is a beautiful water fountain in center field. GM owns the rights to the name of the fountain show and the spectacular fountains go off whenever the Tigers score as well as between innings. For many who come to the park to watch the baseball game, the fountains, which can be set to music, provide a little extra something to make the game that much more enjoyable.

Detroit Tigers fans can buy all the latest gear both online and off at the Comerica Park shop. From trendy Jerseys to ball caps designed as replicas of those the ball players wear, the park will have guests looking like a part of the team in no time. Visitors to the park might want to bring their own ball glove along because the chance to catch a foul ball or home run is a possibility no matter where seats are located.

Hungry visitors can indulge on all of their favorite baseball park food fare. From hot dogs to ice cream there is a little something for everyone who loves fast and convenient food while they watch the ball game. The park has your typical ball park fare so don’t expect to find anything if you are on a diet. However, most people do not seem to mind and expect to eat high caloric treats when they come to the park.

Comerica Park has also served as an outdoor concert hall. Seating 41,070, the park is ideal for outdoor concerts. In the past, Eminem and the Rolling Stones have played for sold out Detroit crowds, attracting even more attention to the park by those who may not necessarily be baseball fans. While the park has received some minor criticism upon replacing the aging but much loved Tiger Stadium, the new park has grown acceptance by Detroit residents thanks to Comerica hosting its first World Series in 2006.

Comerica Park was part of a project that was developed to help revitalize an aging, crumbling historic section of Detroit. Baseball, America’s favorite pastime has helped to put pride back into a city plagued with poverty, job losses, and high levels of crime. While Detroit still has a long way to go, Comerica Park has helped to create a safe place for people to go that is sure to put a smile on their faces.
