Mitchell, South Dakota’s Corn Palace

Corn Palace is an amazing building in down town Mitchell, South Dakota and it is special because it has picture on the outside of it that are done with corn. Corn Palace is right in down town Mitchell, South Dakota on Sixth Street and Main Street. All different colors of corn are used to make different pictures on panels on the building. Corn Palace is changed every year with different picture to look at all made of corn. So every year you can go to see corn palace and the pictures will be different.

If you go see Corn Palace in the middle of summer you can see the pictures in the process of being made. People use ladders and scaffolds to reach the pictures that are way above the sidewalk. It is very interesting to watch the pictures being made. They use Indian corn, field corn and sometimes pop corn all in different colors to make the corn pictures on Corn Palace .Sometimes grasses and grains are missed in the picture here and there but the pictures are mainly made of corn.

Each year about 3000 bushels of corn are used on the Corn Palace and there are lights that shine on Corn Palace at night to illuminate the pictures and make them visible. On the inside of the corn Palace you will find different pictures of the Corn Palace in past years and all the different pictures that have been displayed on Corn Palace.

The idea of Corn Palace started in the late 1800’s and it was intended to promote the areas agriculture and to entice additional farmers to the area. Farming was the popular way of life in South Dakota near Mitchell. There is a corn Palace Festival in September that has concerts and a carnival celebrating the Corn Palace. Seeing Corn Palace in the summertime is a wonderful experience but if you go in the winter chances are there may be some snow and it can be a beautiful experience as well. There are some interesting pictures and displays inside Corn Palace so to see it in winter is just as nice as the summer. .

Guided tours of Corn Palace are offered in the summer. In the winter the hours to go see Corn Palace are 8-5 but it is closed for special events. Corn Palace can be a great winter get away for the whole family to enjoy. The pictures made of corn are amazing to see and the pictures of past Corn Palace pictures made of corn are an interesting step into history. Corn Palace is a big building with alot to see on the inside and the outside.
