Miss Jessie’s Baby Buttercream Review

Buttercream, Hair Oils, Kinky, Kinky Hair

A few months ago I found out about Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding, which is a jelly-like hair cream for curly and kinky hair. I decided to buy a jar from a local salon that carried the Miss Jessie’s line, and while I was there I decided to buy a jar of Miss Jessie’s Baby Buttercream as well. I hoped that it would help to replenish some much needed moisture to my hair.

I recently began to wear my coarse and kinky hair without a relaxer and I’ve found that dryness has been my biggest issue. And during the time that I bought the Baby Buttercream my hair was extremely dry and brittle because of the cold winter weather and I kept wearing wool hats that took the life out of my hair.

I found that none of my regular conditioners, styling creams, or hair oils were helping to make my hair softer. So for about a month I kept trying to moisturize my hair and make it more manageable, but nothing worked. I felt like giving up on my natural hair and going back to relaxers because my hair wasn’t as dry when I used them.

But after trying Miss Jessie’s Baby Buttercream, and setting my curls with a hooded dryer my hair felt 80% better, instantly. The Baby Buttercream just revived my hair and made it feel hydrated and soft again. I loved the scent which is kind of sweet, buttery, and minty at the same time. I also liked the creamy texture which absorbed into my hair quickly.

I would have given the Miss Jessie’s Baby Buttercream 5 stars after my first use. But I started to use other products like Carol’s Daughter Healthy Hair Butter and richer conditioners which made my hair feel healthy and soft too. So when I went back to using the Baby Buttercream I noticed that my hair didn’t feel as soft and natural as it did with Carol’s Daughter.

About a month ago I tried the Miss Jessie’s Baby Buttercream again on damp hair. My hair was really soft and pliable as applied the cream to my wet hair, it was great, but I was disappointed, because as it dried it felt harder and drier. Later that night when my hair was completely dry, I also noticed that my hair didn’t feel as healthy or pliable as it does with the Healthy Hair Butter.

Miss Jessie’s touts the Baby Buttercream as a miracle moisturizer that fortifies, strengthens, and locks in moisture, but it didn’t make my hair feel strengthened, in fact my hair felt more fragile because of how dry it’d become after using this.

The Baby Buttercream contains ingredients like lanolin and mineral oil, that aren’t nourishing and that don’t really moisturize hair. It also contains good ingredients like cocoa butter, jojoba oil, and castor oils but it wasn’t enough to penetrate my hair shaft and leave it soft, moisturized, and healthy.

I’m not sure if I’d buy the Miss Jessie’s Baby Buttercream again but I’ll probably finish the 8oz jar that I purchased for $32 though. I plan to only use it on my edges or to add a bit of moisture to my hair when it has already been air-dried. I also think it will come in handy as my hair gets longer and when I want to style my hair in puffs, braids or twists because it absorbs fast. As for now though, I know that I won’t use the Baby Buttercream as a daily moisturizer or on soaking wet hair because it will leave my hair feeling hard as soon as it dries.

I prefer natural ingredients to moisturize my hair, but I would recommend this product to other curly and kinky haired people because I know Miss Jessie’s products work for some people, so it could possibly work for them, and it did make my hair less brittle. But I’d recommend buying the 2oz. jar on their website first because it’s only $9. I give it 3 out of 5 stars, because I like for my hair to look and feel healthy, but other curly girls might give it 5 out of 5.
