Mayflower Restaurant in Greenville, North Carolina

Mayflower, Thousand Island

Over the holiday weekend, my family went to the Mayflower Restaurant in Greenville, North Carolina for lunch as a second choice after our first choice required us to stand for an hour to wait to get seated.

Upon entering the establishment, I found that there was a tiny waiting room which was full therefore we ended up standing while we waited up against the wall as to not block others’ from entering the restaurant.

We were seated before others’ that had been waiting longer were which I did not find that quite fair but never the less we did get seated in less then five minutes. The decor was very nice and I thought we would enjoy our meal however the location of our table was not at all to be desired as it was at the kitchen door which of course was quite busy.

The waitress we had was not very polite or nice. I do not recall her smiling at all during the entire time we were there. She quickly got our drink orders and was off to get them. she did do a good job of keeping our glasses full of our preferred beverage.

She took all of our orders then returned a little later with the salads. She asked who had thousand island dressing and recalling that the waitress had asked me what type of dressing I wanted and I do eat thousand Island. I claimed the salad. She quite rudely said you do not get a salad. I was embarrassed at accepting a salad that was mistakenly not mine and said I thought you asked me for my dressing. She reminded me quite harshly that the dressing she had asked me for was for my chicken. I apologized and gave the salad to the rightful owner.

Later while we awaited our food, my husband asked the other’s when would the bread arrive. the choice of bread for this restaurant was hush puppies. He was told that it arrives with the food. However, they only gave us a couple of hush puppies with our meal. My husband asked the waitress to bring out additional hush puppies but she ignored him.

Now the food was terrible to me. That’s not to say that other’s would not enjoy it however the only person at the table who did enjoy the food was my father-in-law. 1 out of seven people enjoyed their meal. The faults I had with the food was first of all the amount of food. While some would say if you get a lot of food then it’s a good value for your money but when I have to dig into the food to find each part I find it very confusing and quite unprofessional. My hush puppies, french fries and chicken tenders were buried deep within the mounds of fried shrimp. It was very disorganized and not appealing by looks at all. It looked as if the food was literally thrown onto the plate with no care as to how it was presented.

the plate was so covered with food that I had to use a napkin to put some ketchup on so that I could dip my french fries into it. I am used to having to ask for Tarter sauce as the restaurant I visit does not keep that type of condiment on the table. So without looking at all the bottles I asked for some tarter sauce. Again rudely and embarrassing the waitress told me the bottle was right there. I had the feeling that her tone presented to me was the same then if she had said why don’t you look for something. Needless to say that I felt put down by her reaction to simple questions.

As far as how the food tasted, the french fries were hard and cold. the fried batter from the shrimp easily came off and was not a good brown color. the hush puppies were okay but I have had and made better. The tea however was quite good with a proper color and sweetness.

Although some people would think the Mayflower Restaurant would provide a quality entree for a low price I believe they are mistaken. We were charged approx. $80 for a family of seven people two of which got kid’s meals. Tea was $1.99 which I found highly outrageous price when it most certainly does not cost that much to make tea.

I cannot recommend The Mayflower Restaurant in Greenville, NC because I do not feel that you will enjoy the food or the wait staff that is employed there.
