In 1774, workmen had accidentally broke the rock while trying to remove it from its original place. The part that was broken was placed in the town square of Plymouth. It was later moved to Pilgrim Hall for a short time.

This portion of Plymouth Rock was moved back to join the rest of the rock in 1880. Once this happened, the year 1620 was carved into the rock as a way to pay tribute to the Pilgrims who landed in this area.
