Maybelline XXL Mascara: Not as Great as Maybelline Great Lash

Maybelline

Maybelline XXL Mascara has been on the market for a little while now. If you’re not familiar with it, it’s a thick tube of mascara that is black on one end and white on the other. It comes with two formulas; the regular dark mascara and a white serum. When I first saw the commercial I kind of turned my nose up to the idea, thinking “who wants to stand around and put on mascara twice?”. On top of that, I’m dubious about any kind of gimmick, especially in the beauty industry. But Maybelline, in my opinion, has always created the highest quality mascara on the market, and at great prices to boot (let’s not forget they invented mascara to begin with!). A few months ago I decided to give the XXL Mascara a shot when I bought a tube at Right Aid.

It’s easy enough to figure out how to work the mascara. The white serum goes on as the first coat. It’s a bit more slick in application than regular mascara, so you kind of have to work on it to get it stick to your lashes. The good thing is the consistency makes it almost impossible to clump. I ran the brush through my lashes a few times, and then dabbed a bit extra on the tips to achieve full length. The white mascara made my lashes look pretty long. It dries quickly, and then you put at least one coat of the black mascara over top. The regular mascara extended my lashes a tiny bit more, but the white did most of the work. It only clumped a tiny bit.

I was quite surprised, and pleased, with the length of my lashes after using Maybelline XXL Mascara. But that’s not to say I don’t have any complaints about the product. My biggest pet peeve about it is the shape of the brush. I prefer the fat, thick brush used in the Great Lash mascara tube. The brush in XXL mascara isn’t super thin, but it could have a bit more volume. Although I like the length of my lashes I don’t really care for the shape. The brush doesn’t do much to curl your lashes, it just leaves them looking stiff and straight. I prefer the fluffy, natural look achieved by using a thicker brush. On top of all that, XXL Mascara is time consuming! Since I work at home, I don’t have a problem spending extra time applying mascara. However, if I had a job and I were rushing day in and day out, I would probably end up skipping the white mascara all together.

I’ve been using Maybelline XXL Mascara for a couple of months now, and even though it does the trick, I will probably be switching back to Great Lash when this tube is done. I doubt the company will mind; the profit goes to them either way!
