Many people visit Mammoth Cave in Kentucky Each year. They go there for the natural wander of the cave. But many don’t realize theres paranormal activity that goes on there.
Mammoth Cave is the largest cavern in the world with approximately 330 documented miles of passageways and is assumed to have many more miles not yet explored. With its numerous chambers and colorful history there has been many reports of paranormal activity. The most well know story being that of Floyd Collins. A seasoned cave explorer who met his death in Crystal Cave a section of Mammoth Cave.
The story goes, While exploring the cave alone he became stuck in a small passage and despite attempts over many days to free him he died in the cave. During a time when competition for tourist dollars was at full swing. Floyd’s embalmed body was place in a glass fronted Casket and put on display at the enterance of the cavern. For some unknown reason his corps was stolen but was found in a field and returned minus one leg back to the Crystal Cave for display. No one knows why his leg was removed but it was never recovered. He was later taken to the Mammoth Cave Baptist church cemetery and buried. Which is still on national park land.
There have been numerous reports of a disembodied leg running through out the cave. Most people think its Floyd looking for his leg. Although the its gated you can still walk about 1.5 miles to the Crystal Cave entrance, where the ticket booth still stands if you dare to contact the spirit of Floyd Collins.
There are at least 2 other entities reported in a different location at Mammoth Cave. One being a Slave named Stephan Bishop, he was an early cave guied that love the cave so much that he gave up his freedom for the chance to stay on at the cave. The other is a girl named Melissa who is said to have led her unwitting lover to the cavern and abandon him as revenge for him scorning her advances. He was never seen again and those who have witnessed her say that she is still searching for him.
There have been lots of Photos taken in and around the Cave mostly by unsuspecting tourists of Orbs, Unexplained Mist, Shadowy Figures, and of course the disembodied body parts.
Of course with a cave as steeped in History as the Mammoth why would anyone be surprised that there is a few Ghosts around. I do have to say from my own experiences I have never seen a Ghost at the cave but then again I’ve only been once as a child. Maybe someday I can have the experience of meeting Floyd Collins.
