Making the Basic Toilet Paper Roll Puppet

The first step in creating a toilet paper roll puppet is to decorate the cardboard tube. Begin by cutting out a piece of construction paper the correct size to cover the toilet paper roll. Glue this to the roll. Then, paint or use markers or crayons, to decorate it in the way you want. Make a face on the front and draw clothing all the way around. Use various trims and accents to make the puppets more creative.

Once the toilet paper roll decoration is complete, the kids can tape a Popsicle stick to the inside of the cardboard tube. Tape it in two places to be sure it is secure. This is the stick that the puppeteer will hold when giving a show.

Toilet Paper Roll Puppet Variations

The toilet paper roll puppets can be made in many different types. The only limit is your kid’s imagination.

To make a cat puppet, color orange or grey stripes on the toilet paper roll. Use a pen to draw bright eyes, a triangle-shaped nose, and a mouth. With narrow pipe cleaners, glue on three whiskers on each side. Use construction paper to fashion ears and glue them to the top of the head. Use a piece of yarn for the tail.
