Kentucky Derby Party Supplies and Tips

Limo Service

The 2009 Kentucky Derby is a time to celebrate, party and have friends in on the racing action! Every year we host a Kentucky Derby party and invite close friends for the bash at our home. It is a weekend affair that starts Friday and ends Sunday. Having out-of-town guests over a weekend can be hectic to plan.

As far has keeping your Kentucky Derby party supplies under control? We’ve got you covered. These tips are more effective for those who dare to spend the day in the infield! You can apply some of these supplies whether you stay at home or hit the road!

Here are some great Kentucky Derby party supplies & tips for your big day!

1. Big Breakfast
Start the day right with a big breakfast. You want to have plenty of energy and a full stomach. Each year we make goodies, such as, egg casserole, French toast, fresh fruit, banana bread, sausage and bacon etc. Treating your guests to a homemade breakfast is a great way to show your appreciation for them. Don’t forget your Mint Juleps, Bloody Mary’s or Mimosas for those who want to start the party early!

2. Smart Attire
This is so important but easily forgotten. Wear what is comfortable! You will stand in line, you may sweat and it might rain, so protect your feet. Sneakers are the best way to go and will keep your feet dry. Using the port-a-potties can be a mess and unsanitary on your feet. You can always pack an extra pair of flip-flops to lounge in within your backpack. Wear light colors that won’t soak up the sun – no black! Water or sweat resistant fabrics are so comfortable and are great for unexpected perspiration. And as always, hats and sunglasses are a must! Pack extras for guests, just in case.

3. Party Favors
Since it is a party and costs can rack up, get a small token of good luck for your guests. Run out to the nearest gas station and pick up some derby or racing related scratch-offs for each of your guests. You can present them with their breakfast plate or place them throughout the house for them to snatch up!

4. Transportation
Discussing transportation early on is key! There are three great options: carpooling, limo service and van rental. Van rental is the most cost effective and a large van can hold up to 15 passengers. Make sure everyone is aware of how the transportation will work, who is driving and who needs to contribute monetarily. Be sure there is at least one designated driver willing to be responsible for the group to and from the Kentucky Derby.

5. Sun Block, Wet Wipes & Tissues
These items are a must!!! Make sure to pack a couple of bottles of sun block in your bag for guests. They will be so grateful! At least bring SPF 45 for the fair-haired one in the group. Wet wipes & tissues are so helpful with the port-a-potties and every year our guests expect me to have them. They make for easy and sanitary cleanup!

6. Lawn Chairs & Blankets
Make sure you have enough chairs for everyone in the group. If not, ask a friend to bring some with them. Bring along a blanket. Place the chairs along the outer perimeter of the blanket, as to designate your area for your group.

7. Coolers for Snacks & Water
Yes! This year you can bring coolers into the Kentucky Derby 2009. So fill it full of your favorite treats and non-alcoholic goodies and plenty of water!!! Keep you and your friends hydrated throughout the day. If that means have a couple of waters in between beers – do so! The beer will only dehydrate you and make you feel worse the next day. Snacks are a great way to munch and keep down on pricy food stands.

8. Cameras
Of course! Make memories, capture memories and maybe delete some.

9. First Aid
I can’t say how many times you will hear “Man, I have a headache” or “I think my allergies are kicking in”. Pack plenty of headache and/or pain reliever. Also, bring along band-aids and anything for heartburn and tummy aches. Remember, this is an event surrounded with alcohol and food.

10. Toiletries & Linens
To cap off the experience when you get home (or the night before too) is a good night’s sleep. Make sure you have plenty of space for your guests. Ask them to bring sleeping bags and blankets but never assume they will have what they need. Stock up on fresh clean sheets, blankets, pillows and towels. You want have your bathroom stocked with extra toothbrushes, toilet paper, hand soap etc. A nice touch is to always lie out fresh towels, a candle, and a basket full of goodies in your guest room.

These really are the bare necessities. Don’t go over-the-top trying to impress your guests. If you have what they will need, they will be grateful. Going to the Kentucky Derby and having a Kentucky Derby party is about being with friends and having a great time. Preparing with these bare essentials will get you through the day and ensure an awesome experience no matter whom you are with! Let the races begin!
