Johnson’s No More Tangles: A Review

Detangler, Dry Hair, Wet Hair

Johnson’s No More Tangles is supposed to make detangling easier and manageability better, but it did neither for me. I tried using this product several times thinking I must be doing something wrong, but unfortunately it was the product that was faulty, not my application technique.

Johnson’s No More Tangles spray detangler has already been revised and is now marketed as the new and improved version. So what was wrong with the old one? I have no idea since I never used it, but I can tell you that they should have done a bit more work in the lab before re-marketing this product.

Johnson’s No More Tangles can be used on wet or dry hair; Johnson’s claims it can be used on dry hair to keep it neat in between shampooing, but I would never use it on dry hair after my experience using it on wet hair.

Directions for wet hair:

After shampooing, rinse hair thoroughly and squeeze out excess water.

Spray evenly over entire length of hair and work through. No need to rinse out.

Comb or brush out hair, starting at ends and working back towards scalp.

For extremely tangled hair, repeat steps 2 and 3.

Directions for dry hair:

Spray directly on hard-to-comb areas until damp.

Comb or brush through hair.

*Now I can assure you that if you spray this on your dry hair, it will need to be washed so don’t even bother.

I come out of the shower with a rat’s nest in my hair, so combing it immediately is not an option. I was hoping Johnson’s No More Tangles would magically make my knots disappear like a magician’s assistant, but unfortunately it did nothing – except cause a mess.

The spray is more of a milky white coating that does not adhere to the hair, but rather it just slides down and falls onto the ground. This is very dangerous because it makes the tile floors slippery; make sure you are standing on a bath mat or towel when applying the detangler.

I combed my hair after spraying the detangler, but the knots wouldn’t budge – just like a mule – so I sprayed even more detangler and still, the knots remained. I was so frustrated because at this point the spray was dripping everywhere and my hair was still tangled.

I cannot imagine using this product on a child – the intended customer – since it was a bad enough experience for me, an adult. The worst part about this is that Johnson’s have not improved their hair care products over the years; I clearly remember how matted my hair became after using Johnson’s No More Tears shampoo as a child.

The ingredients for Johnson’s No More Tangles are: water, behentrimonium methosulfate, sodium benzoate, dimethicone, hydroxyethyl, behenamidopropyl, dimonium chloride, polysorbate 20, cetearyl alcohol, trisiloxane, citric acid, fragrance, ceteth-10, and laureth-4. How many of those can you pronounce?

My lasting impression: Do not waste your time, money, or energy on this one.
