Jack Link’s Turkey Jerky Review

Jerky, Osteopenia

Since I have been on a diet, my doctor told me that it’s important to be sure that I am getting enough protein in my diet, and one of the ways that I do that, while cutting down on fat grams and calories is to enjoy a tasty treat called Jack Link’s Turkey Jerky.

Jack Link’s Turkey Jerky come in a 3.5 ounce plastic bag, with a heavy duty zipper style closure across the top. This size bag retails for $4.49 but I picked it up at Target for only $2.24, so it was half price (and it was not close to being outdated).

My package of Jack Link’s Turkey Jerky states that it is made with premium cuts of turkey breast, and that this is the original Turkey Jerky. This family owned company has been making jerky since 1885, and the back of the bag states that they are “Quietly becoming America’s #1 brand of jerky”.

The bag has a clear bottom so you can see what you are getting, and it contains pieces of jerky that are smaller than what I am used to seeing from some other companies. There is also a packet inside of the bag that absorbs oxygen to keep these tasty treats fresh.

After I opened the bag and started enjoying this jerky, I had a hard time putting it down, the pieces are so tender and tasty that they quickly become addictive. The bag contains 3 one ounce servings, each having 80 calories, 0.5 grams of fat (it is 98% fat free), 0 grams of both saturated and trans fats, 20 mg cholesterol, 700 mg sodium, 3 grams of carbohydrates, 0 grams of fiber, 3 grams of sugars, and 15 grams of protein.

Looking over the nutrition facts, I am very pleased with the amount of calories and fat grams, and I love that such a small portion has such a generous amount of protein! This is a great food to pack along when hiking or camping, because it is packed with protein but is extremely lightweight. I like the low sugar grams and low amounts of carbs, and even the cholesterol is not too high for me, but what I don’t care for is the extremely high amounts of sodium. I have osteopenia (bone loss) and am not supposed to eat a lot of salt, my doctor explained that sodium can contribute to bone loss because it robs the bone of needed calcium. Having said that, I have yet to find a low sodium jerky of any kind.

The 700 mg of sodium listed are 29% of the US daily value, and this is just a snack! With that in mind, I still enjoy this product, but I try to limit how much I consume in one sitting. I prefer to eat turkey jerky over beef jerky because I personally feel turkey breast is better for my body than beef. That, of course, is a personal choice. But taste wise, I was very pleased with the flavor, the tenderness and the overall taste of Jack Link’s Turkey Jerky.

Jack Link’s Turkey Jerky comes with a “Family Quality Guarantee”. If you are not satisfied with this product, they will replace it when proof of purchase is provided. A toll free number is listed on the bag for your convenience.
