Interview: Bon Blossman Talks Big Rich Texas

Style Network, Vow Renewal

While Texas is known for its southern hospitality and residents warmly embracing their neighbors and newcomers alike, the Style Network reality show ‘Big Rich Texas’ is showing the real drama between Texan women from the Woodhaven Country Club. Returning for a third season on Sunday, October 7 at 8/7c, the dynamics between the cast members on the show are set to be drastically changed, as they question their relationships with each other.

The third season of ‘Big Rich Texas’ follows a new mother-daughter duo enters the picture. Single mom Cindy Davis spends her days partying, while her daughter, Alex, is forced to take on the role of the mother.

While Davis’ brash personality clashes with most of the other women, she finds a connection with Leslie Birkland. Davis empowers Birkland to stand up for herself, leading to Birkland taking on longtime rival Melissa Poe. She also confronts her billionaire friend, Bon Blossman, about their rocky relationship.

Blossman generously took the time recently to discuss over the phone the filming of ‘Big Rich Texas,’ and how the experience has changed her life. Among other things, Blossman, who is also a published horror fiction author; C.E.O. of an international murder mystery company, My Mystery Party; and a developmental physiologist, spoke about why she decided to return for another season of the reality show; how her relationships and jobs are chronicled on the series; and why she enjoys the horror genre so much.

Question (Q): You’ll be returning to the Style Network’s highly rated reality series, ‘Big Rich Texas,’ for its third season premiere. Why did you decide to return to the show for another season?

Bon Blossman (BB) : Well, me and the girls have grown really close; well, some of them, actually, like Connie Dieb and Mellissa Poe. We’ve become really good friends, and I enjoy filming with them. So it was a no-brainer that I was going to come back for another season.

Q: You grew up in Westover Hills, Texas, and after attending high school in Germany, you returned to the Dallas-Fort Worth area. What is it about Texas that you enjoy living there so much?

BB : Well, like you said, I’ve lived all over the world. I even lived in California for a short period. Of course, even traveling and seeing different places and customs, there’s nothing like Texas. Everyone’s very welcoming, and have Southern hospitality. I just feel at home here.

Q: One of the most anticipated aspects of the third season is when Leslie stands up for herself, and confronts you about your rocky relationship. Are there any details you can discuss about your conversation with Leslie, and how your relationship is now?

BB : I will never be friends with Leslie again. The things that she has done to me and my family this season are unforgiveable.

Q: While you don’t have the best relationship with Leslie, you do seem to have a close relationship with your 24-year-old daughter, Whitney. Will your relationship with her be featured on the upcoming season?

BB : Yes. Actually, this season between me and Whitney is much more positive than previous seasons. I think a lot of that is her growing up. She does find love. Of course, when we find love, we do need our mom to be there for you.

A lot of exciting things are happening for Whitney. I enjoyed filming with her, even though we had our little mother-daughter spats at times. But she was funny. We have an interesting relationship.

Q: Will the rest of your family, including your son and husband, be on the show?

BB : Yes. But my son is really busy. He’s a varsity kicker on the football team at school. He’s in his senior year, so he had a really busy summer. He’s also an electronic dance music producer. So he didn’t have a lot of time for the cameras. But he was there on occasion. My husband does play a big part this season.

Q: Are there any details about the third season of ‘Big Rich Texas’ that you can discuss?

BB : Well, in general, I would say this season is definitely the best season so far. The drama never stops. There’s been so much drama this season that I can’t even keep up with it. After this season, they should definitely still have cameras around us.

There are lots of good things, love and laughter. There are a lot of funny things that have happened. I would say definitely by far, this season will be a hit.

Q: You have several different professions, including being a published fiction author; C.E.O. of an international murder mystery company, My Mystery Party; a recording artist; and a developmental physiologist. Will your various jobs be featured on ‘Big Rich Texas?’

BB : Well, let’s see. I am a part-time professor and physiologist. That is not really highlighted on the show, because no one wants to see me lecturing bio-chemistry. (laughs) I don’t think that would be all that entertaining for the viewing audience.

But the release of my newest fiction novel, ‘Fiona Frost: Order of the Black Moon,’ will be featured in episode five. I have a really cool release party. It’s vampire-themed because the three main suspects are part of a teen vampire cult. So that was really, really fun. The book’s been really great, it’s the second in the series. We’re releasing the third pretty soon, I think it’s January 15.

Q: Are you going to have any horror events or jobs that are going to be featured on the upcoming season of ‘Big Rich Texas?’

BB : Well, the only one that I really have is the ‘Fiona Frost: Order of the Black Moon’ release party. It was a pretty big event. One of my friends has a 25,000-square-foot house, and we used that as a castle. Everyone dressed up, and it was a wonderful event. It was a wonderful book launch event for me. But I plan on hosting, and focusing on, murder mystery parties, hopefully for season four.

Q: Would you be interested in returning for a fourth season if the Style Network picks the show up again?

BB : Oh, absolutely, we’re in.

Q: Are there any reality shows that you’re a fan of?

BB : Yes, I’m a die-hard ‘Big Brother’ fan. This season, I was Team Ian. I’m glad that I picked him from the start, and he won. Of course, I have to go with the science guy.

But then I also watch all the cooking shows, like ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ and ‘Top Chef.’ I also like ‘Project Runway.’ I love to see new designers, and the fabulous things they can create.

Q: As you mentioned, you have written several horror novels, including the ‘Fiona Frost’ series and ‘614 Scarlet Ct.’ What is it about the horror genre that you enjoy so much, and do you have any plans to write another book in the ‘Fiona Frost’ series?

BB : I think as a kid, I was always fascinated with the real haunted houses you would go to and get scared. I would live for those every year. Then, of course, I also love scary movies.

I’ve always been interested in gothic, creepy things. It made sense that’s what I would focus on when I started writing in the ’90s, because that’s what interests me. Then it changed to murder mysteries, and now I have the murder mystery company. I found my home in slightly creepy murder mysteries. (laughs) Yes, there will be a third ‘Fiona Frost’ book, which will be released in January.

Q: There are some vampire novels and series that are popular right now, like ‘Twilight’ and ‘True Blood.’ Are there any vampire novels or series that you enjoy?

BB : Yes, I do actually like the ‘Twilight’ series. I haven’t read all of the books, but I have read the first one, and I’ve seen all the movies so far. I really do enjoy them. But that’s the only vampire series I’ve really read.

Q: Last year, you had an all horror theme for your vow renewal ceremony. Why did you decide to go with that theme while renewing your vows?

BB : Again, as weird as it may seem, that’s just where I feel at home, with gothic, creepy core. I love the color black, and it all kind of made sense. I didn’t want my friends bored with a traditional ceremony. I wanted to spice it up, and make it more me. Why even bother with tradition?

Q: With Halloween approaching next month, do you have any professional horror plans lined up, through My Mystery Party or your other jobs, or personal plans?

BB : Oh, definitely. I host murder mystery parties all throughout October for my friends. That’s where I can test them out for my company. I make them all come over, and we have a blast at these parties. I work out any kinks before I put them in the market.

But October is my busiest month for my murder mystery parties. We’re really, really busy around the office.

Q: Do you have any popular parties through My Mystery Party?

BB : I would say my most popular one is called The Anadome Manor: A Dinner Party to Die For. That’s the traditional, old-school mansion setting (for the parties). It’s almost like did the butler do it type murder mystery, but there’s no butler. There are a lot of layers of mystery, and it’s been one of our top things since probably 2006.

Q: Now that ‘Big Rich Texas’ is so popular, and you’ve been writing your books, are you getting recognized by fans?

BB : Oh yes, we pretty much can’t go anywhere without being spotted. But I enjoy meeting the fans. I never realized there are so many good people in the world. It’s really enriched my life to be able to meet so many good people.
