Ideas for Side Swept Hairstyles

Curl Hair, Curling Iron, Hot Rollers, Tresemme

When I was young, the side swept hairstyle was basically, very dramatic. The hair was either swept all over to one side, had an extreme part with the hair covering one eye or it was a back combed and poofy side ponytail.

Nowadays, a side swept hairstyle can be as simple as having varying degrees of side swept bangs. However, in this article I’m including several styles that go beyond that. Most of these are for hair that’s longer than shoulder length. But there are also two styles for shorter hair:

Flowing to one side:

Full waves; Set hair on hot rollers. Do an extreme part on one side. Pull back hair, past ear, on side with less hair and fasten with a pretty clip or barrette. Curve the other side across forehead.

Loose curls; Curl hair with a large barrel curling iron. Then giving hair a side part, sweep hair back around head onto one shoulder in one mass of curls. Then mist with hairspray to hold.

Windswept curls; Apply a small amount of mousse to hair and loosely curl bottom third of the hair. Add a little mousse to the top front of the hair and blow dry away from face for a windswept look. Then pull hair back around head onto one shoulder.

Half up-do; Make a short side part in front, then sweep top half of the hair over to one side of the head, near the ear. Fasten with a pretty barrette or clip. Then loosely curl the ends. Depending upon what look you want to achieve, you can either leave loose any stray strands around the face for a romantic look. Or you can fasten all
loose hair with hairpins for a more tailored look.

Side ponytails:

Loose and wavy; Set hair in hot rollers. Part the front on the side, then pull the rest of the hair into a low, loose side ponytail and fasten with a pretty barrette or band. Then pull out a few pieces to frame the face, curling around your finger and fixing with a touch of styling gel.

Soft curls; Part front hair on the side. Then gather the hair into a low side ponytail and fasten. Then curl the ends with a curling iron. Lay the ponytail onto one shoulder and spritz with a gel spray.

Tousled; Fasten your hair into a bun and sleep on it. The next morning part the front hair on the side after undoing the bun. Pull the hair into a side ponytail and allow it to drape over one shoulder, leaving any stray tendrils to enhance the look.

Side braids:

Loose braid; Part front hair on the side, then pull hair back into a low, loose ponytail. Braid hair loosely to the end and fasten, laying it on one shoulder. Leave any loose tendrils in front to frame the face.

French braid; Part front hair on the side. Then start weaving the braid at the top back of the head, on the same side as the swept front hair, gathering the side hair as you go. When the braid is finished fasten and lay over the same shoulder.

Side buns:

Thick curly bun; Apply a volumizing mousse before blow drying then curl bottom half of hair with one inch curling iron. Then pull hair to one side and fasten with a band, pulling the curls back through until the last pull-through, then leave half way pulled through. Pull back any loose curls and pin to finish.

Tousled bun; Fasten slightly damp hair into a tight bun and sleep on it. In the morning, refasten hair into a loose side bun, securing any loose locks with hairpins. If you desire, you can loosely curl with a curling iron before refastening into a bun.

Knotted Braid; Pull hair to one side and neatly braid. Fasten the end of the finished braid. Then coil around on itself behind the ear and finish by drawing the end through the center of the coil until the end is drawn through until it can be pulled no more. You can leave the end loose or pin it underneath the bun.

Short styles:

Loose curls for shoulder length hair; Set hair in hot rollers then finger comb the curls to separate them. Part front hair in the middle, then pull to one side of the head and fasten with a clear elastic, leaving the front loose and wavy.

Short and curly; Apply styling mousse to hair and with a curling iron, curl the hair away from the head. Then flip everything including the front over to one side and secure with hairpins and mist with hairspray.
