How to Write a Customer Service Resume

Formatting
You need to make sure you include all of the key elements in your resume and make sure that it flows well and is easy to read. The first thing you will need is your name, address, phone number, and e-mail address. Make sure your e-mail address is a professional looking one even if you are only applying for a summer job. If you have to create a new e-mail address for your job search do it, make sure it’s something simple and related to your real name. Other important information that needs to be included is your education history, job history, and any relevant extra curricular activities. Make sure you include anything that you feel gave you good experience communicating with people such as a public speaking class in college or being involved with new student orientation.

Getting the format right can be hard for some people. Making your resume easy to read and flow well is a problem that many people have trouble with. I personally used this free template from LifeClever for my resume. An important thing to keep in mind if you use a template to help you construct your customer service resume is to be sure you fill everything in and don’t leave tell tale signs that you used a template such as “City and State” instead of the actual city and state.

Your resume should stand out in a crowd, not because it is horizontal instead of vertical, printed on a strange color paper, has added images on it, or bizarre fonts, but because you are the right person for the job and your experience shows that.

Objective
Many resumes include a line of the job objective. You need to be very specific if you will be using the objective line. Be more elaborate than “to obtain a customer service job” by citing a little about your experience. I personally leave this off of my resume as I believe the fact that I am applying for the job expresses that my objective is to be employed in that position.

Other Tips
-Do not go over one page. There is no customer service position that requires you to list so much job history, education and experience that you should go over one page. Very rarely will any job require a resume that is more than one page long.
-For extra curricular activities, only list what is relevant. If you aren’t applying for a position that deals with clothing, the employer probably won’t care that you are interested in fashion so leave it off.
-Be honest. More than likely they will be calling your references and you don’t want to be caught in a lie because you will look like an idiot and not get the job.
-Proofread.
-Use a cover letter.
-Make sure you list all of your skills and experiences that fit the description of the job you are applying for. Any time you have worked with people in the past whether it was in a job or school setting is relevant and could help your chances at getting a customer service job.
-Make sure your font is not too small.
-Do not make your margins too wide, it will squeeze all of your text to the middle of the page.
-Full sentences are not described for your job descriptions or other areas of your resume, do not be too wordy.
