How to Survive Living in a Motel, Hotel

Job security is something that is really putting a damper on many families’ lives. More and more people are losing their jobs. In-turn this leads to a loss of income. If you find yourself in this situation, and end up staying at a motel/hotel for awhile I am here to tell you that it is ok. Things are rough for many people in our country now. If you have children you may find yourself wondering how this will work. I have met many families lately that have been forced for one reason or another to move into a motel/hotel. I hope this article gives you some ideas, and tips on making hotel living work for all.

Your family has a roof over their head. I know that depression may fall into play, but please do not let it. You are not alone. You are providing shelter for your family. You family does not have to sleep outside in the elements. If someone looks down upon you, ignore them!

I know you are wondering what you are going to do with all your belongings, right? Well, if this is the case and if you have the finances storage facilities are all over. Call around and find the best deal that you can. Put everything that is not a daily necessity into a storage unit. Doing this will save you from having to re-purchase everything once you are on your feet again. If you find yourself in a situation where you simply cannot afford a storage unit please remember that those objects are just that material objects. They can be replaced when you need them again.

How do you explain to your children what is going on? I am sure you have thought about this. Sit them down and talk to them. I am willing to bet they will be understanding, and just happy your family will be together. Children can adapt much more easily than adults give them credit for. Make to sure to bring along at least one of their favorite objects.

What about cooking? You can cook in a motel. It really will depend on which type of motel/hotel you are in. If you are in one that has no oven, stove top, etc you can cook via microwave, BBQ grill or a hot plate. I know this is not what you are used too, but it is a way to cook and feed the family. Hot plates are rather inexpensive or perhaps you know someone who is an avid camper you can get one from? You will have to rethink about the foods that you make daily.

Privacy will have to be left behind you until you are able to have some again. Many families have to sleep in the same room. Just remember that your children are able to sleep in a soft warm bed. I have met some of the closest families that live in motels/hotels. Their family bonds area amazingly strong.

Oh those dirty clothes! Again, this depends on where you are staying. Some hotel/motels have laundry on site while others do not. After having a home and access to a washing machine any time you wish it may be a huge adjustment to not have this luxury for awhile. The good news is that your clothing can still be washed and dried.

Is there any help? Call your local town, and any charities that you have locally. Many of them have programs to help families in transition. Most Human Services Departments have options for you as well. Many states also have the “211” program. This is where you pick up a telephone and dial 211. You will be connected to a person who can lead you in the right direction.

No matter what, please remember you are a strong person and will get through this. I wish you all the best in your journey. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me. I will do anything in my power to help find you answers’.
