How to Make Your Own Perfume at Home

According to my experience, I feel that the ingredients in a bottle of store bought perfume or cologne cost much less than the retail price of the perfumes. This is because much of the cost goes to packaging, advertising, sales profit, tax, etc. And if you make your own perfume, you will not have to worry about the added chemicals and preservatives going onto your skin and drying it out or, even worse, having an allergic reaction to it.

Now, won’t you rather create your own perfume at home?

Here are the instructions to create your own winning perfume formula:

1- Get your bottle.

You will need a sterilized, dark, heat-proof bottle to put your creation in. I used any empty perfume bottle after sterilizing it. Do not use clear cut glass bottles since they attract perfumes worst enemies: heat and sun. If you feel you must display your new creation in a beautiful bottle, store the majority of your perfume in a separate container and only what you want to display in the pretty glass one.

2- Buy essential oils concentrates, distilled or spring water and 100 proof vodka.
Note on essential oils: Since each person has an individual chemistry in their body, it is best to try a sample of the essential oils. Essential oils come packaged in all different size bottles from a sample up to a gallon size. The sample size tube is like the perfume they used to give out in the department stores. These appear to be the perfect size for testing the oils if you think you might be allergic.

Most common essential oils that I would recommend are lavender, vanilla, jasmine, rose, ylang-ylang, carnation, patchouli, juniper, musk, orange.

3- Get a notebook to write down your formula.
You will need a notebook to record and track down the exact number of drops of essential oils that you used when making up your formula. Remember that only one drop of essential oils can change the whole essence. For instance you know you put in orange, rose, and jasmine, but was it one drop or two of vanilla, and 3-4 drops of orange or rose? And, in what order did you mix these into the alcohol? So if you stumble upon a masterpiece creation, you really want to make sure that you have your notebook to look back on and re-create your winning formula.

4- Mix your perfume formula ingredients by following the 5 steps below:

1.Take your essential oil concentrates and add essential oil(s) drop(s) to 2 ½ ounces of Vodka, stirring very slowly and long enough to disperse the oils. That’s what I did.

2.Let this mixture stand (cure) for approximately 48 hours.

3.Add nearly 2 tablespoons of distilled or spring water stirring slowly and thoroughly.

4.Let this mixture stand (cure) for another 48 hours. Some people let the perfume stand anywhere from 4-6 weeks curing time to get a stronger formula, and not a cologne. This is up to you, just remember if the formula seems too strong you can always add 1-2 tablespoons of water and dilute it back down.

5.Pour your cured (matured) perfume creation through a coffee filter (so any sediment does not get in the final product) into your sterilized bottle.
