How to Make a Scarf Shower Curtain

Napkin Rings, Scarves, Sewing Curtains

There are many styles of scarves on the market today. One can find sheer scarves, faux paux silk scarves, and cotton style scarves.

There are many colors and patterns associated with scarves. You can also find scarves in squares and rectangular shapes.

While scarves are meant to be used as clothing fashion accessories, there are other ways to use scarves as accessories and accents. Not only can the scarves be used as curtains, they can be used as table coverings.

The next time you see a woman dawning a scarf as a fashion accessory, notice if she has any type of jewelry attached to her scarf as well. Those same jewelry pieces can be added to the curtain or table covering as an added accent.

For a fun accent for a party theme, one could use the square country style handkerchiefs as well. These handkerchiefs can be sewn in a manner to make curtains, table clothes, and table runners.

The scarves can be used to create valances, full length drapes, café curtains, and outer shower curtains. For those who are living in older homes missing doors on closets or cabinets, the scarf style curtains can serve a purpose in this matter of hiding your clutter.

Materials Needed to Make Scarf Curtains

Measurements. Measurements of the shower you are making the curtain(s) for. You can make one full shower curtain or two shower curtains. By making the two, you will need to have the same amount of scarves as you would need for the full shower curtain.

You will need the width and length of the shower. You can use the same measurements of the shower liner you already have to get the size of the shower. You will need to add an inch and a half to each side of the shower curtain for a side hem. You will add three inches to the top and bottom for the top and bottom hems of the shower curtain.

Long Rectangular Scarves. You can use the same patterns, colors, and fabric styles to make your curtains. You can also make a patchwork style curtain if you choose to do so. You will need enough of the scarves to make the appropriate length and width needed for each window, shower curtain, door way or cupboard. You will also have to decide whether you want to use the long rectangular scarves or the square scarves.

Sewing Machine and Corresponding Threads. It will be easier to sew the scarves together with a sewing machine rather by hand.

Jewelry Pieces. (Optional) If you would like to add pieces of jewelry to help add accents to your curtains, choose pieces that will not pull the curtains from the rods. You will want the jewelry pieces to correspond with the other accents in the room.

Napkin Rings. (Optional) You could use napkin rings as a way to hang your curtains on your rods. There are as many styles of napkin rings as there are scarves.

Shower Curtain Hooks. (Optional) You can use a second set of shower curtain hooks if you wish to do so. If you prefer not to, just hang the shower curtain in front of the plastic or water resistant shower liner.

Ribbon. You will need ribbon one-inch wide minimum in order to tie the shower curtain to the rings you are using for the outer shower curtain.

Step One: Scarf Shower Curtain Layout

You will take two of the long rectangular scarves and lay end-to-end for each row. You will lay each row side-by-side until you have the width of the shower stall or tub/shower combo.

Step Two: Sewing the Scarf Shower Curtain

You will lay the right sides together, end-to-end and sew across. Continue the process until you have all the strips sewn together.

Once you have the lengths sewn together, lay the strips right sides together, and sew each of the strips together down the length of the strips. Continue this process until you have completed the width of the shower curtain.

Step Three: Hemming the Scarf Shower Curtain

Fold over the sides of the curtain three quarters of an inch and fold one more time and pin the length of the sides of the shower curtain. Sew the hems in place.

Fold the top and bottom hems1 ½ inches, and fold 1 ½ inches again. Pin. Sew these hems.

Step Four: Cutting the Ribbons for the Scarf Shower Curtain

Cut 12 strips of ribbon seven inches long.

Fold the strips of ribbon in half.

NOTE: If you chose to use the napkin rings, reverse the following steps. This will leave the cut ends facing up. This will allow you to tie the ribbons onto the napkin rings. See the instructions for hanging the curtain in the next step.

Pin one ribbon with the cut ends 1 ½ inches from the top end of the shower curtain.

Then pin the next ribbon 6 inches from the first ribbon. Continue pinning the next nine ribbons six inches apart. The last ribbon should be six inches from the last one placed and 1 ½ inches from the other end.

Sew the ribbons onto the shower curtain.

Step Five: Hanging the Scarf Shower Curtain

Using the same shower curtain hooks you have with your shower curtain liner, unhook each of the hooks and add the ribbon shower curtain hangers into the hooks and close shut.

NOTE: Hanging the shower curtain using the napkin rings. You will need to take the shower curtain and rod down to hang the shower curtain. You will need to take the liner off the shower rod. Use the following steps to use this method.

Place one napkin ring holder on, then place the regular shower ring on, and alternate until you have the liner and shower curtain hung. Rehang the shower rod.

You now have completed your scarf shower curtain.

You can pull the shower curtain back to one side leaving the holders in place on the rod. In order to do this step, you will need to have a tie back to hold the curtain in place. This will give the shower curtain a totally different look and a whole new look to your bathroom.
