Breezy Home Decorating with Sheer Curtains

Home Decorating, Sewing Curtains, Window Decor

Sheer curtains have a special relationship with light and using this quality to decorate your home will give your rooms a breezy feel, even when windows are closed. You’ve seen the beautiful magazine pictures where sunlight streams through fabric and colors the light indoors. That’s what you want to capture when home decorating with sheer curtains. Here are some breezy ways to do this on a budget.

Add Sheer Curtains Behind Heavy Drapery

You shouldn’t give up on privacy to have breezy window treatments. If you have heavy drapes instead of blinds, add sheer curtains behind them. You can hang a second, lower curtain pole behind the valance of the drapes and suspend your sheer curtain. Decorate your home by opening the drapes in daylight but only partially opening the sheer curtains.

Make Sheer Curtains Yourself

Go to a fabric store and take a walk down the fabric aisle. You’ll find stunning sheer fabrics in many colors and patterns. Choose your favorite and buy enough for the length of your window. If the fabric is wide enough for the window, just cut it in half. Otherwise, buy double the fabric. You can hem the fabric, or you can buy a no-sewing hem tape and follow the instructions on the package. Hang your sheer curtain with clip-on curtain rings.

Hang Net Fabric Knots In Place of Sheer Curtains

Decorate your home with exotically tied sheer curtains made from fishing nets or net fabric found in fabric stores. Make sure the net reaches from your window pole down to the floor. Hang several strips of net and tie each with a big knot in the middle. Expect this decorating style to elevate the sheer curtain bottom well above the floor.

Decorate Your Home with Shower Curtains

Gone are the days when shower curtains only came in stiff nylon. You can find stunning, sheer shower curtains that cost less than home decorating curtains. Hang your curtains from a curtain pole using shower curtain hooks to match your curtain in style or pattern.

Make Sheer Curtains from Closeout Fabrics

Quite often you can find beautiful silk and rayon on sale when the fabric is almost out. Though such fabrics may not seem sheer, they will become so when light streams through them (much as a skirt can become sheer that way). Use no-sew hemming tape all around or sew a lace border around the edges. Create an extra-wide top hem for slipping the curtain pole through, or hang your sheer curtain with clip-on curtain rings.

Decorate Your Sheer Curtains with Tie-Backs

Though sheer curtains are stunning when sunshine streams through them, they are more beautiful at other times of the day when decorated with curtain tie-backs. I especially love ornamental ropes with beaded tassels, and you can find inexpensive versions at a fabric store rather than a home decorating one. Festoon your sheer curtain in a wave over the curtain tie-back for extra beauty.
